Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger traveling on an airplane. Experience shows otherwise, considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year. Media coverage would suggest that airline crashes happen every day. Studies have shown one would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident"
Flying is very very safe. Don’t worry about terrorists that is the least likely thing to go wrong on a commercial flight in the US these days. Flying in the United States is very safe, there has not been a major airline crash in the US since November of 2001! That is a long time for no major crashes and only on fatality in the last seven years for the Major Airlines in the US.
Even when there is a problem on an airplane, if an engine fails on takeoff or an engine fire etc.. 99% of the time the plane lands safely. Planes these days are amazing piece of technology and the pilots are trained better than ever. If you not afraid to drive in a car you should not be afraid to fly in a plane.
Just sit back relax and try to enjoy the flight. Its one of the safest things you can do much safer than driving a car, walking down the street, or even sleeping in your house. More people have died on North American highways in the year 2006 than the amount of people who have died in powered flight aviation whole 104 year history!
Also the best way to completely get over your fears is go to you local General aviation airport and take flying lessons! Once you fly in a small airplane a few times and learn that airplanes fly and that’s all they do you will be much more confident with flying on commercial planes. You will learn a lot with a few flying lessons. I could even teach you a lot by just showing you my Microsoft Flight Simulator. Flying is a great experience, once you get used to it and learn what makes airplanes fly etc.. your fears go away trust me, I used to be a little bit scared to fly too. Now I LOVE it.

since that scare in England the TSA has been stepping up security at major airports. i have been a pilot for American since 1991 and never once been scared because of terrorists!!!!! for motion sickness you can buy pills. you are more likely to die driving to the airport than flying in an plane! enjoy the ride flying is a great experience and if your REALLY afraid talk to the flight crew or one of the pilots I'm sure they will give you good advice. i get those questions all the time!!

Either get over it or stay where you are for the rest of your life.

What scares you?
More people die in their showers than in airplanes.A car is a zillion times more dangerous than a plane.
I wish you the best.

Sure! I travel all the time. First. Planes are safer than a road trip. That's a fact. You can look up the statistics. When I ride I am sure to wear comforable clothes: yoga pants, t-shirt, sweat shirt/jacket (it gets cold on most planes), slip on shoes. Carry on: Gum (helps to pop your ears when going up/down), music, magazine, camera, ID, lip gloss, money, beef jerky, candy, and maybe a book. If it's a long flight I bring my own fleece blanket to help keep warm/use as a pillow. You can get some neat pictures with a camera out a plane window. Basically just bring stuff to make sure you are comfortable and occupied. I am also a Medic in the Air Force and I learned much about the design of planes. The plane can fly's best with all engines running, but it can fly without all engines running, Safety checks are done on the plane before every take off, The seats are designed for comfort and safety. They are very high tech. The scientists have thought of everything possible to keep you comfortable and safe while flying. And the pilots and flight attendants are very highly trained in their jobs. All you do is think about how amazing the plane is, how it is able to lift itself up off the ground and soar through the sky, look at the world below, the clouds, the night sky, talk to the people on the plane. See what they say about flying, why they are flying, where they are from and where they are going. Flying is fun, it is an a chance to see your world and learn about it from the people on the plane with you. Just take a deep breath when the plane takes off, relax, and enjoy!!

I use to be terrified to fly. Had nite mares for months prior to my trips. Then I found out a little about planes, what keeps them up, I was always afraid those big heavy things just weren't going to get off the ground OK. But after I settled down, really tho't about it, I over came it. I actually lost my fear of flying & looked forward to going on trips when I never tho't I'd ever say that. Gets you there faster, much safer than driving w/the idiots who are on the roads driving in vehicles when they shouldn't even be behind a wheel period. There are many over the counter meds. you can get, or go to your Dr. & see if he w/perscribe something for your jitters. Trust me, you'll be fine & have fun. Look at it being like going on a ride in an amusement park!!!

Planes are one of the safest forms of travel in the world. You have a 100 times greater risk of being hit by a drunk driver than in a plane. What you should be woried about is the drive over to the airport not the ride on the plane.

Jessica
It's not scary at all. I remeber when that happened to my friend. Your just a little nervous, thats it. Once You get on the plane, you're going to have lots of fun. I love going on planes and i'm sure you'll love it too. It's really fun. Trust me, you're going to love being on a plane and you're going to want to go on more often.

Amanda
Breathe deeply, before and during the part you're scared of. If you can, choose an airline with an in-flight entertainment system (e.g. TVs in the seats). If fear of heights is part of the issue, choose an aisle seat. If the airline's rules and technical systems allow, watch TV through the takeoff process for distraction. Hold a loved one's hand if that's an option!
Most importantly, be brave and work through this now...a friend of mine who's 50 just flew on a plane for the first time in 20+ years, and now she's feeling really silly about everything she missed in those years of fear!

Okay. I had never been on a plane, but all my life I had wanted to go to Hawaii (love Hawaiian Music). In March of '99, my husband asked me where i wanted to go for my first plane ride: Mall of America, or Hawaii!!
I said Hawaii. So that May, my husband, our son, and I boarded a plane to Honolulu, Hawaii.
At first, I was scared (of course), but I had some word search puzzle books, some chewing gum (helps the ear popping problem), and some books to read.
It really helped out alot, plus if there is a good movie that is on the screen.
The turbulence was very minimal (felt to me like riding over a pothole here in michigan). After that first time, I have had no problems whatsoever. I hope this helps you! Good luck and have a good time!
BTW, since '99, I have flown to Honolulu Hawaii five more times!!
