Oh ignore the two previous answers!! that's awful! I understand EXACTLY what you mean!! I feel exactly the same!! I remember being 12 yrs old, and my dad actually had to CARRY me onto the plane i was so scared! I've been reassured time and time again that its safe, and of course it definitely is! I still feel like you though. Its proven that more people die on the roads each week, than people that dies on planes each week. I also have to be sedated, but last time i didn't i managed it. Take your mp3 player, or a book and you can sleep if possible. All of these things help to yake your mind off it. As soon as you feel a bit of turbulance, don't panic. Tell yourself its perfectly safe and its just turbulance, nothing will happen and it will stop after a while. I can assure you, you will do just fine if you use your mind-power! Good luck xx |

its the safest way to travel just remember that theres more chance of you choking on a cabbage leaf and dying than there is dying on a plane |

suck it up buttercup.
the first time i flew i was scared outta my wits.
i actually chewed threw the headphone cord on my cd player.
but when you get on the plane, just listen to some music or read a book and just pretend you're sitting in your lazy boy.
or listen to music and try to fall asleep.
just get your mind off things and forget you're actually on the plane.
hope that helps =) |

its not easy,i think most people are apprehensive if they are honest.try reading or listening to tapes or try praying if that helps you. the nuns do on planes ive heard them |

You are statistically more likely to be killed by a donkey than in a plane crash.
If flying really bothers you, you might want to look into courses that people run to conquer fear of flying, or clinical hypnosis (which is nothing like you see on Paul McKenna!) to help. You should be able to find information about these on the internet or your local doctors surgery etc.
Good luck! |

if its a night flight, you can sleep...even on day flights too...take some snacks, books and maybe a therapy pillow. Flying is really the best and safest way to travel. Maybe take a photo of u and ur friends that might calm u down. Dont worry, they check EvErYtHiNg!!!! at the port, get some friut snacks, and on the plane chew them very very slowly w/ ur eyes closed. that always helps me. Gum will also work. I always take some lotion so i dont get dry. I used to be scared, but i took a mini mini fan and i just relaxed and that was it. take deap breaths, and it will be over be4 u know it!!don't be nervous. Flying is fun, get a seat by the window so you can look out at all of the clouds and stuff. The view is very calming. tip, if they offer movies- watch them, the funnier the better! but it's no big deal, you might enjoy it. |

I have flown alot and still don't like to fly.
I get around it by reading a book, not looking out the window.
The scarest moments are at take off and landing (unless you get turblence). If you have ever been on a rollercoaster, its just like that but a very different noise.
Try a desensitizing, there are experts that can help you control your fear by slowly exposing you to what you fear and keeping you calm. After a while, you'll be good to go. |

Flying is the safest form of transport. The problem with people who have a fear of flying is that they are not in control. Also sadly, when a plane does crash, there is hardly any survivors. This in itself is a very frightening thought. Look at the statistics. Crossing a road, or driving a car, you have more chance of being involved in an accident of this type. You could try hypnosis, I have read that this does help a considerable number of people. Good luck. |

I was going to make an A-Team joke till I read the rest of your Q. Just enjoy it - flying is statistically the safest mode of transport. |

I'm not so much scared of flying but crashing .....its when the plane starts to nose dive into the ground, suddenly and without warning - that's what would scare me - good luck on your first flight!!!
Also if the Flight crew ask over the PA system "Does anyone know how to fly a plane" be afraid - be very afraid. Hope I haven't put you off in any way. |

I have a fear of flying also.
One thing I do is take a cruise ship when possible.
I also go by car, train, bus or R.V.
But, if I HAVE to fly......Pray.
They say it is one of the most safest way to go, but I still don't like it.
Good Luck |

I hate flying! it doesn't help when i watch all the air plane disaster documentaries!! I am serious here i only fly p****d, i drink a few stiff shorts before a flight, and i have done some long hauls to! Safest seat on a plane is the wing section as the fuselage is stronger in build to accommodate wing sections!! |

I hear you. I am terrified of heights yet a plane makes me feel safer than anything. I use to be scared to death of planes. I wouls puke just going to the airport. Now I look forward to flying and i always ask for a window seat. I look at all the sites and enjoy every minute of it! |

Just get on that plane and think of the wonderful place you're going to, and all the cool stuff you're going to buy when you're there. |

My wife was exactly the same,
She went on the Virgin fear of flying course which was really good and "cured" her. We have been to Spain about 4 times since. |

It is a very safe way of travelling. You are missing out on so many places if you dont fly, that would take far too long by road/sea etc. Book yourself on a fear of flying course they will answer all your questions and explain all the noises you hear on the flight. |

I hate flying, but my parents live abroad so I had to do something about it.
I have to fly with 2 kids and I didn't want to pass my fears onto them.
So I went to www.fearofflying.com (its free) and did the course. I still feel a little uneasy when I fly but the course did help me feel 100% better about flying and every time I do it gets easier. |

Hello,
(ANS) Fear of flying is extremely common and although aircaft technology is making planes & jet engines much safer then ever before it doesnt take away our irrational fears. Yes! my rational self says dont be stupid its totally safe but my irrational self, my emotional self gets pretty fearful & dreadfully anxious even before I get on the aircraft.
Secondly, the fear of flying is often linked to the fact that we have to "let go" our sense of control. Its a big test of our having to trust someone else (the pilot) quite literally with our lives & well being.
In normal life there are NOT many situations I can think of were I have to let go my trust to such as degree as with flying & air travel.
Thirdly, air travel literally "ungrounds" us, we literally have to take our feet off the ground and again this is very weird for humans, its NOT our natural condition & this adds to our sense of fear and our sense of feeling VERY vulnerable.
**To over come your fear you have to face your irrational fears, face your irrational self as it were.
**There are special fear of flying courses to can go and take part in run by a number of different airlines, I think "Ba" run them here in the UK. I would have a look via the internet & via either Yahoo or Google.com for fear of flying courses.
Best Regards (happy new year!)

Flying is very safe, the safest form of travel in fact. I think if you see your doctor he will be able to refer you to people that may help...
There are several ways of conquering fear, from hynotherapy to systematic desensitisation ...(i did a behavioural science degree!) Your not alone fear of flying is very common and there is always an answer. But first start with you doctor.
Best of luck! |

I used to be, now I fly everywhere, at least twice a month. It doesn't bother me anymore.
All except the bone crunching smash and people and body parts flying towards you from the front of the plane knowing that its you next. The noise of twisting metal and a fireball exploding. Thankfully I have my seatbelt on though.
I know a fireman at an airport and he told me you would not believe the state some of the planes are in.
If its your time, its your time, just enjoy the waitlessness for about 60 seconds. Then splat. |
