some cases, educating people with a fear of flying about the realities of aviation can considerably diminish their fears. Learning how aircraft fly, how airliners are flown in practice, and other aspects of aviation can assist people with a fear of flying in overcoming its irrational nature. Many people have overcome their fear of flying by learning to fly or skydive, and effectively removing their fear of the unknown. Some people with a fear of flying undertake education themselves; others attend courses (for people with the phobia or for people interested in aviation) to achieve the same result. Some airline and travel companies run courses to help people get over the fear of flying.
Education plays a very important role in overcoming the fear of flying. Understanding what a certain sound is or that an encounter with turbulence will not destroy the aircraft is beneficial to easing the fear of the unknown. Nevertheless, when airborne and experiencing turbulence, terror can result even through the person has every reason to know logically that the plane is not in danger. In such cases, therapy - in addition to education - is needed to gain relief. |

Remember statically you have more chance being killed in a car, than flying somewhere. You can get hypnotised for that, I have heard they have a great success rate for fear of flying etc.
I had a friend who was the same, his hands used to be dripping with sweat, he was petrified, his cure.......he bought a place in Portugal and flew so often that he overcame his fear. But it would be cheaper to get hypnotherapy!! lol |

You could try 'Kalms', they are herbal based stress relief pills and they really work. |

If you have to think of this every day until October they will have to drag you kicking and screaming on that plane won't they. Don't go and use the money to buy a new washing machine or TV |

Depending on your personality, there are several things you could do:
1. Learn how to visualize in your mind a picture of yourself boarding that plane and enjoying the flight. Imagine that it will be a smooth ride all the way to your destination; that you will be relaxed and have no fear. If you are willing to try that technique, there are books written about it. I recommend one called "Positive Imaging", by Norman Vincent Peale.
2. If #1 sounds hokey and new-agey to you, try speaking to someone who is a pilot or a flight attendant and ask them about their love of flying and why it is safer to fly than to drive a car every single day. Ask for their suggestions.
3. Speak to your family doctor about taking a mild sedative when you board the plane.
4. While on the plane, listen to relaxing music, watch the on-flight movie, or read a book/magazine that really interests you.
5. Finally, realize that it is normal to be scared when the plane hits a bout of intense turbulence. Who wouldn't be? I have a friend who is a pilot and even he hates it when that happens. The difference is, he doesn't panic. Neither should you!
I hope you find a solution and have an awesome flight. Enjoy your vacation! |

Go up for a flight/trail lesson in a light aircraft. You'll learn about what happens, and get used to turbulence. its how I got over my fear of turbulence. |

calm down on the plane! slowly take DEEP breaths and start to fall asleep. if you get airplane sickness, eat an anti-plane sickness pill. read a book, talk, go on a laptop, eat something, focus on your breathing (to fall asleep)
good luck!

The best way to overcome this is to visit your doctor and tell him of your concerns. Ask him to refer you for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which is a form of therapy which will help you to explore the reasons for your fear and to develop strategies for dealing with the fear when it arises. When you are ready to try a short flight, the therapist could even ask an airline if they will allow you to fly alone for a short time and rate your fear.
Hope your flight this time is a lot smoother and you conquer your fears. Flying should be a brilliant experience, not a terrifying one!!!!! |

Go to your doctors, get him to prescribe you some diazepam which will basically make you not have a care for flying and completely relax you out. JUst tell the doctor your scared of flying this is a valid reason for prescription. |

Go see your doctor. He can prescribe a sedative to calm your nerves, and or possibly enough so that you sleep on your flight. Also, meditation helps. If you start being able to say some words within yourself to help calm you, it'll help your nerves.
I don't know if this will help or not, but on my flights, whenever there's a bump, or a bit of turbulence, I imagine being in a car, on bumpy road. Just imagine it skidding along a cloud. There's nothing to worry about, just a bumpy car ride...
Good luck! And seriously, look into sedatives with your doctor. They'll severely help you! |

DO NOT take any advice suggesting you should get drunk - please!! Drinking alcohol increases the risk of Hypoxia (a dangerous oxygen deficiency), it dehydrates you, as does flying, and you'll not only be putting your health at risk but you'll not start your Holiday off well if you're feeling like crap!
I'm sure everything will be absolutely fine, there are lots of noises on aircrafts and lots of turbulence but it's nothing to worry about. Like a lot of people have said you should consult your Doctor first, and in flight, just remember these few things that might help:
(1) Talk to someone it'll take your mind off it (ie The person you're travelling with, the person sitting next to you, or if they're not up for talking then talk to the Cabin Crew)
(2) Watch the Safety Demonstration and read the safety card - at least you'll increase your chances of survival should anything go wrong
(3) Drink plenty of water, not alcohol
(4) Try and sleep
(5) Remember the Crew have First Aid Kits containing remedies for Sickness/Diahhrea/Headaches etc so dont be scared to ask them for anything if your worrying has caused you to have an upset stomach or sore head
Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip! |

You have time to start with some therapy. That sounds hateful, but I don't mean it that way at all. Lots of people are afraid to fly, but there are some very good techniques available through counseling that might help you. Good luck, and enjoy your trip! |

I agree with what someone else said about learning about how planes fly and what keeps them in the air etc. Also you should know that statistically air travel is the safest form of travel. You are more likely to be killed in a car that on a plane. Secondly, look up what causes turbulence. I studied it in university and it is very interesting. It happens in bad weather obviously but also around mountain ranges. Bascially most mountain ranges are so tall that they interfer with the upper air waves so instead of them being nice and flat they wiggle. Plane fly at about this level so it the air waves a wiggling then it causes the plane to bump across them. Its got nothing to do with the workings of the plane and if the piolet can, they will normally fly at a higher level to escape it as they only happen at a certain height. |

If you're that scared, you should look into travelling by sea. I don't get why people are scared of flying nowadays, its like a massive bus with loads of movies to watch! |

if you're TERRIFIED - then don't go!
But look at the statistics... a flight... even a 10 hour one - is much much MUCH safer than being in a car. |
