Any government-issued identification is acceptable. The most common ones are a driver's license, passport, or military ID. If you do not have one, or a current identification, you can use a student ID but you will be subject to additional screening before you leave security checkpoint. |

Probably not. Its not official. Official ID means Driver's License, Passport, something like that.
With security, there is not way you'd get through. |

If you are a member of a state college, and not a private institution it will work. Any ID issued by the state or government is acceptable, and a school ID is one issued by the state. The person that thinks he is a know-it-all and is saying that you have to have a driver's license is full of crap, I have gotten by with a High School ID a few years ago, when things were even stricter. But If you want to be safe, also bring your birth certificate. |

No way. You need a license, state issued id or passport. (unless you are too young then you need a birth certificate, but you indicated you were in college...) |

Government issued photo ID is required..School IDs do not qualify as an acceptable form to get through security. I don't expect you to believe me over anyone else but call your airline and they will tell TSA policy does not allow a student ID instead of a drivers license. You can get an ID made at the court house that looks just the a DL but it is just an ID...and I wouldn't recommend traveling without it. You can get by with a high school ID if you are 17 and younger because ID are not required for domestic travel under that age. College students are older and therefore that does not apply! |

The TSA doesn't really make this info easy to find on their web site. From what I have heard, you can still get through the security lines without ID, but you will have to go through a much more thorough search. The list of acceptable ID doesn't seem to include a college ID, but I think requirements vary. I think the best thing to do is to call the airport that you will be flying from and ask what their requirements are and what you can do if you do not have any acceptable forms of ID.
EDIT: I just came across the NorthWest Airline site that indicates that you MUST have ID to get past security, and it must be government-issued photo ID. However, in some cases you can substitute two forms of ID, one of which is still government-issued. I still recommend that you call the airport - or perhaps the airline - to get the exact requirements and figure out what you have that is acceptable.
EDIT: I'm certainly no travel professional, and if it were me I would still call the airport or airline to be sure instead of trying to sort out the various answers here, but here is the link to the NorthWest site that inidcates that you CAN use ID other than a driver's license for a domestic flight, though there are specific requirements: http://www.nwa.com/features/update_airport.shtml#2
Also, under the "What You Need" section of this page from the Transportation Security Administration it says "We encourage each adult traveler to keep his/her airline boarding pass and government-issued photo ID available until exiting the security checkpoint (children are not required to show identification). The absence of proper identification will result in additional screening." Which seems to indicate that they will still let you through if you pass the screening.

For domestic flight, yes. You may be subject to secondary search (more thorough examination of your bag), but that's kind of random. |

I am so surprised to find such a variety (and incorrect) answers. In order to fly within the US you must have a state issued photo ID - which a college ID is not. If you don't have a DL you can get a state ID. IF YOU TRY TO PRESENT ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL BE DENIED BOARDING.
If you are flying outside the 50 US states (and from a previous question, some don't realize Hawaii and New Mexico are US states) you will need a passport. This includes mexico and Canada, which until last year could be done with a state ID and US birth certificate.
All other answers are wrong. I am a travel professional and have been for 10 years. |
