Find out if they're going to feed you on the flight (if it's a short, domestic flight, they might not) and depending on how long the flight is, you might want to take some food with you.
Go early for your seat assignment, and make sure you don't get stuck in a middle seat.
Take a book to read on the flight. |

Try not to get a seat near the rear of the plane. That's closest to the bathroom and has it's customary odor. It's true you'll want to be at your gate early so you can be one of the first groups on the plane. It's important to put your carry on luggage in your overhead bin as soon as you get to your assigned seat. You want to make sure there's enough space for all of your things. No one wants to have to check luggage 8 minutes before take-off.
I recommend having a light snack in your carry on. Depending what airline you're taking you might not be offered anything. Bring something to do. Either a book, crossword, laptop, iPod... It's like traveling any other way, after a while you may need entertainment. Or at least a distraction. I recommend a window seat simply because then you control the shade. If you're in the aisle and some smuck likes the sunshine in his face while you're trying to take a nap, could mean for an annoying flight. Unless you invest in an eye mask. They always help me sleep.
Just remember to relax and try to enjoy the flight. Traveling is always exciting. It's what you make of it! |

Here are the main ones
1. Sit on the aisle seat, in case you have to go to the bathroom often. The only exception, is if you are definitely planning on sleeping (then the window is the best option). The window is usually a lot colder than the aisle (since you are only a few inches of metal away from -10 degree air for most of your flight. The center seat is the absolute worst. Avoid at all costs!
2. Reserve a seat up near the front of the plane so you can exit and enter the plane as early as possible (to find overhead spaces for your carry-on bags).
3. Grab a pillow or blanket if you want it..as soon as you board, since once everyone boards, you may not be able to find an extra set.
4. Don't talk to your neighbors unless they really want to.. it's pretty irritating to the folks who are not in the conversation to be forced to listen to it for hours...
5. Put your bags over your acutal seat, so you don't have to fight for them when the plane is unloading at your destination.
6. Bring a book or laptop to keep you occupied during the flight. You'll be surprised how little sleep you can get on a noisy plane...
7. Definitely bring some food, or eat at the airport. Most flights do NOT offer free food. The ones that do offer food usually only serve at specific times, and for a fee (cash only).
8. Drink plenty of water, and wear comfortable clothes. The pressure in the plane dehydrates you, and makes your joints swell up.
9. You should get up and walk around every few hours to keep your circulation going, and to avoid deep vein thrombosis (a clot in your blood system).
10. Don't argue with the flight attendants. They are usually stressed out enough, and if they are telling you to do something, its because they have to.. not a personal issue with anyone in particular.
11. Take your trash off the plane with you, or give it to the flight attendant when they come by. Don't leave the plane messy. It will take them that much longer to clean up before folks at your destination will be able to board that plane for their flight.
12. Most importantly, bring an ipod or something to listen to. There is almost always someone who brings a screaming baby (that will not stop crying) on board. It usually starts at some point... and takes a while for it to subside. You will be thankful forever if you have something to listen to (other than a screaming child).
I fly 2x / week for business every week... so I see everything that folks do. If everyone did their part, it would make flying enjoyable for ALL! |

Bring gum to chew during take off and landing - it'll help pop your ears as they adjust to the altitude change. Get a window seat if possible so you can see the great views!!! |

Well it all depends on your age.
I would suggest brining an iPOD or an mp3 player. A book is a good thing to bring too, but it may cause motion sickness. If you are OK with being in the backseat of a car for prolonged periods of time (3+ hours) you should not get motion sickness.
I would try to relax and have fun. Airplane flights are fun experiences, and should be throughly enjoyed.
Do NOT bring earplugs or or blindfold yourself. You should suck in all the noises and sights you can. Bring a camera and take pictures when you are full flight and electronics sign is off.
Have fun and enjoy the free food and snacks they give out! Being me some peanuts or pretzels :P ! |

Minimize the amount of time you take to check in and go through security. While waiting to check in, get luggage tags from the counter and fill them out ahead of time to put on luggage. (even if you have tags on them, they require the airline ones also)
For anything you will be carrying on, make sure everything is arranged so you can find it and have ANYTHING that is liquid in a Ziploc baggie. Before going through security, pull out the Ziploc baggie and put it in the conveyor tray. Makes things a lot simpler.
Take an MP3 player on board. You won't be able to listen to it right away, but once the flight attendant announces you can use approved electronics (MP3 is one of them) you can listen to your music instead of the steady hum of the engines or crying or restless children.
If you have a connecting flight, don't worry about the announcement on board before arriving to the gate. You will want to check the monitors for your flight the minute you enter the terminal. Gates change often, so this is the best way. Good luck...I think you will enjoy it. |

You may chew on a gum during take off and landing to lessen that thing that happens to your ear on high altitudes, you know what I mean? :)
Relax |

Just sit back and enjoy the ride...the one thing i always wanted to do was travel, the only thing that stopped me was my fear of heights...i wasted so much time over nothing! thank god, my determination outgrew my fear...my tip, let the flight attendants know you are a first time flyer then just sit back and enjoy the ride...bon voyage... |
