I am going to fly for the first time, and effing terrified!?

Yeah so I am 21 and I am going to travel from Washington state to NYC in a month and a half. I have never been on an airplane before. I am so terrified that even now, sitting here THINKING about it is making my stomach queasy... other than having a drink, what do you people suggest? I do not want to miss this opportunity but I also don't want to have and anxiety attack when I get on there.

Flying is very safe ... your more likely to die in a car accident than you are in a plane ... enjoy the flight.

It's quite wonderful that we're able to take to the skies at all, and many will never have the chance - enjoy it :D

Well, if you do have an anxiety attach at the airport, you will not be allowed to board the plane. If you have an anxiety attack while on the plane, you will be placed in plastic restraints and given a hypodermic injection of sedative and will be taken to a psychiatric emergency room as soon as you land.

Think about the consequences BEFORE you make the final decision whether to fly or to take the Greyhound bus.

think about the positives. very few flights end in disaster of any kind and it's FUN to fly! I love it. I love looking out the window and seeing all the teeny houses and cool shapes that the farms make and seeing all of the baseball fields from the air. try to think of it as an adventure! If you are afraid of heights, maybe you shouldn't look out the window.

before exams, a professor of mine in college used to say a native american term (I can't remember the tribe) "hookahay - it's a good day to die" I always say that to myself when I am scared or apprehensive. It's a fun way to look fear in the face!

Hey, don't worry. Everything is gonna be fine. You'll need some good distractions like book or music. If you don't want to deal with motion sickness, take Dramamine half an hour or fifteen minutes before boarding time and you'll fall asleep quickly once you sit on the plane. Taking deep breaths also help with the nervousness. And probably you'd like to sit on the aisle side instead of sitting next to the window. Last thing, don't worry about turbulence. Turbulence happens because the plane is going through some clouds, nothing to worry about. Thinking about pleasant things, perhaps, will also help you out. From my personal experience, I find that holding to the arm rest or to the pillow while closing my eyes helps reduce the fright when the plane is taking off. Have an enjoyable trip! :)

Have you ever wondered that you may actually get addicted to flying after this first trip of yours? =) You may be missing something big in the last 21 years.

I find it easier to overcome fear by finding out more about what you are afraid of. Try to read up (internet, books, articles, Yahoo answers...) about how the plane works, what causes it to fly and stay in the air; the reputation of the air companies and their accident record, etc. The more you know about flying, the less anxiety you will have towards it.

If that cannot ease your mind, I suggest that you take a couple of sleeping pill before your trip and have a nice nap during the trip.

I'd like to see you book yourself a window seat and enjoy the take off and landing parts of the journey.

Well, lets see can I help. I work as a stewardess almost 4 years already, so that means I was in the air probably close to 500 times, flying short (1 hour), long (14 hrs) distances and everything in between. I have never experienced anything scary up there and only thing it might make you feel uncomfortable is turbulence, which is so normal and safe that I'm actually happy to have it, 'cause I don't have to do the service then hahaha...Trust me, if there is a bad weather coming, pilot will avoid it, 'cause he knows ahead of time what are the weather conditions up there. In case he goes in, that means he knows that plane can go through safely. It's his life at the stake too! Best thing to do is to look at stewardess and see does she acts normal, 'cause believe me if something goes wrong, you will see it on our faces too. Have fun flying, you don't need to get drunk (they might off-load you), just enjoy the view its amazing feeling.

its great, yes have a drink and maybe take something to relax you before the flight ...close your eyes on take off and relax youll love the rush; go for it its great

Take a deep breath and decide not to let your fear overwhelm you. Accept that you are scared, but move on from it. You are going to take this trip and you could start thinking about what you will do in NYC. When you begin to think about the flight, turn your attention to something else. Try to stay busy and redirect your fearful thoughts. The more you think and agonize over your fear the more scared you become. Try acting like you're not scared and you'll actually become less afraid. Also, consider asking your doctor for something to relax you such as vicodin or valium.

Yup Yup CENSORED
Listening to music or a good book. Personally travelling with a child takes the edge off because they're not scared.

You have nothing to worry about though. I've flown three times and I'm 19 yrs old. The only thing that's horrible about it is the turbulence.

Well first thing.. if you get motion sick you better take some dramamine with you on that plane or you will get sick right on the take off and it won't get away till after you land.

You are probably going to be scared. Don't worry about turbulence because it's normal. Going through a cloud is very bumpy. Try to take music to listen to so you don't listen to the sounds of the plane if you are that worried. Bring something to keep you preoccupied and not worrying too much.

Hope this helps and it'll be ok!

Just relax and have a deep breath. Before you get on the flight, make sure you have enough sleep. And don't forget to bring some nausea medicines, in case you may feel sick in the plane. But air plane is a quite safe transportation, you know.

I have flown many times. It's a fun thing when you sit beside the window. You could see many things up there.

Hope you enjoy your first flight.^_^
