With phobias, you simply break them down slowly and gently, little by little. It can be done. For instance, first you go to the airport and sit for a while, just getting used to that! Do that once or twice. Then, see if they will let you "view" the plane with a hostess sometime when it is just sitting in the hangar or runway (having explained the situation to the counter people) I used to work for an airline, and they can arrange these things usually. Walk in, if it is empty, see if you can just sit for 5 minutes. Talk to a friend or family about what it did for you and how you felt about that experience. Phobias are irrational, so no amount of talking will solve this. You just have to get in, take a relaxant (from your Doc who you talked to first) and buckle in and ride. (Prayers always help me! If you do not pray, try visualization of your destination with you and your family happily vacationing wherever it is that suits you!) Good luck! |

I agree, flying is sort of uncomfortable, and I also have this thing where I get this headache when in tight places. Just try to get a window seat near the bathroom where there's lots of open space in the back. Then, you can get up each hour or so to take a walk. Enjoy the inflight movie, and maybe bring a few sudoku puzzles to keep you company. Just get it over with and maybe you'll even overcome your fears as well. |

Go to your doctor and have him prescribe some tranquilizers. If you drink, a couple of stiff drinks might help. |

Can't help the claustrophobia I'm afraid but to help the fear of flying spend a day at Heathrow (or your busiest local airport) a couple of weeks before you fly. This will reconfirm the number of safe flights there are and put things in perspective for you - works for me!
Bon voyage! |

I was really frightened too and my husband booked me on to a course run by BA - Aviators - Overcome your Fear of Flying. It was held at Gatwick and after a whole day of seminars, behavioural therapy etc with trained professionals including BA pilots, cabin crew and air traffic control workers we took a short flight with constant narrative by the pilot. I found it great and have since flown to the Carribean. Cost is around £250 but worth every penny. Good luck! |

I would say that if you fear flying that much, do not go. |

Agreed. Flying is horrible. If you can't take a boat or drive, don't go. |

Try any of the self-help recommended here or online. You can go on a one day fear of flying course, MANCHESTER AIRPORT do one, or you might have a nearer airport. The cost is £200 for the day including a return training flight. It works for thousands of people. Some very simple psychological or therapeutic advice might just do the job, you have made the first step by wanting to address the problem and deal with it. Well done! |

Try a local hypnotist. It's a very basic psychological fear that should be quite easy to retrain. Fear of flying is made up of 4 basic fears: claustrophobia, fear of heights, fear of loss of control and fear of technical failiure.
Start with a couple of the sites below, to examine your fears, then think about how a hypnotist could help you. |

Oh dear that is a handicap. I really don't know what to suggest. One of my daughters was very frightened and had to be drugged before she could fly but this was cured when her husband bought his own plane and he needed her to navigate. If is is any help I recently heard that the safest from of transport is a lift or escalator and the second safest is a commercial aeroplane. |

go see your doctor. i was terrified of flying and my doc gave me some pills to take before i got on the aircraft which helped. also pre book your seat. you may be able to select a seat which might have more room around it. please try it as you are missing out on a huge world and its worth the effort. good luck. |

British airways offer a same day return flights, if you request what would otherwise be empty seats on any flight by waiting at the airport terminal, they would be offered at reduced cost, it would be a short internal flight, maybe less than 30 minutes and you will be able to face your fears before you go on your holiday. |
