I think it has to have 6 months time still valid from the time you return
check the british pasport website it will tell you
but I think it will need renewing before you go

D R
most countries require six months, change it early you will not lose out as the passport office adds the time to your new passport

Elliot Ness
Most place require 6 months. I would get it renewed you don't want to get turned back at the airport, or worse the Egyptian airport customs.

I suggest it normally they require 6 months.

Most places require you to have at least 6 months remaining on the passport.

country bumpkin [sheep nurse]
best to check normally you need 6 months left to be able to travel

The UK Foreign Office indicates that Egypt expects Brits to have at least 6 months left on their passport. This usually means that, at the time of entry, you should have at least 6 months remaining on your passport from your anticipated exit out of Egypt. You should verify this requirement with the Egyptian embassy - the UK Foreign Office has contact details.

Also bear in mind that the UK Passport Office allows UK passport holders to renew their passports at any time. If you renew up to 9 months before your current passport expires, any unused time will be added to your new passport. In other words, if your passport is expiring in October 2008 and you are travelling in June 2008, apply for a new passport in February 2008.

synopsis
most people get away with that sort of thing.

but two years ago a friend of a friend tried to enter the uk on a non-eu passport with three months of visa still to run.

he was turned back at the airport, and then had to sit cooling his heels for nearly six months while he got a second visa sorted out. there was no problem with him, but his passport had been queried (because he had tried to enter the uk on a short-date visa).

why would you take a chance like that?

no you have to have 6 months and it will be no use checking the british passport office you need to check with the egyptian embassy to confirm the facts.
you will have to renew before going

Generally, your passport should be valid for at least six months from the time of your intended entry in Egypt. However, this rule is what we call a grey area because some immigration officers my allow you to enter Egypt even if your passport's validity is less than six months. It is also heavily dependent on your nationality and the presence of your country's embassy or consulate in Egypt. For example, if you're holding a Syrian passport, you can enter Egypt with your present passport as Syrians are only required to have a three-month valid passport. Of course, if your passport is valid for a longer time, so much the better.

For your peace of mind, contact the Egyptian embassy in your country. A single phone call would certainly help.

No. Egypt will not let you in if you don't have six months on your passport. Also get your visa from the Egyptian embassy before you travel. You can get it at passport control but it is absolute chaos to try it!

RENEW, NOW!!!

You have the time and will avoid problems!
