The problem with 3rd party websites is that for the most part, they are scams. #1 they are going to charge booking fee's and then offer rediculous connections. As the other 2 people have said, the airlines will have the best rates and the least amount of restrictions as well as better schedules. You can use a search engine to find who has the lowest advertised price and then go to there site. Still shop around though. Check the airports actual website for Costa Rica to see what airlines service that airport and then check your airports website and compare. Some may have code shares, meaning they will sell seats on each others flights. Watch for those. Delta may sell a seat that is operated by AeroMexico and if you check AeroMex. the seat is $200 cheaper, that is just an example though.

February is the end of winter and beginning of spring travel season. So, shop now and book early. Always book 30 days or more in advance. If you still get the winter rates you can rack up really well. Also check you local newspapers travel section, they usually have a head up on the travel deals out of your local airport.

Sign up for Travel Zoo, its a great e-mailer and alerts you to fare sales on hotels as well as airfare.

Check other airports if you have a few close to you, or if you live near a small airport, check the next largest one close to you especially if it is a hub for someone and not a far drive.

I tried working for a .com travel site only to find out that they were a scam. They take care of 4 companies...so stay away from Cheapseat.com, 11thHour.com, Onetravel.com and they even do Sam's Club Travel...amazingly enough...this company (the parent company to the previously menitoned .com's) is a scam and should be shut down. I was there one day and saw how people are losing money left and right by using these .com's.

No matter what site you use, should you choose to use a travel site, ALWAYS READ THE FARE RULES before purchasing. Should you use something like Priceline, or Cheap Tickets, Hotwire...etc or by from any bulk consolidator or a website that does not let you see what you are getting before you purchase....you are locked in to that ticket and you can not make any changes for any reason and the airlines will not touch them if there is a problem.

I'm a travel agent and usually you can't get anything lower than what the airline prices are.....sometimes travel agents get contracted rates but most people cant get any lower than what the airline gives

I fly between 80-100 times a year (mostly for work) and every single time I get an airline ticket, I find the cheapest flight directly on the airline's website. Like if I'm flying American Airlines, which I do a lot, I go to www.aa.com. I usually check with Expedia.com or Travelocity.com and see which airline has the cheapest flights, then I go to that airline's website and pick the same flights and they're the same price. Actually, they're cheaper because almost all of those websites charge a $5 (or more) "booking fee". Also, most airlines - including American - guarantee you will find the cheapest prices for their flights directly on their website. One more thing: Just about all of the "low-fare" airlines, like Southwest or JetBlue, ONLY advertise their flights on their own websites, so you can't book one of their flights on Expedia.com or any other websitte. So check their sites also, although they're also not always the cheapest either - almost every time I fly, I get the best deal on American or USAirways or one of the other major airlines.

Also one MORE thing: If you're willing to fly into other airports, like Oakland instead of San Francisco, look into those as well. The more flexible you are, the more likely you are to find a cheaper deal.

So basically, shop around but most likely it's best to book from the airline directly.

If you have serached a load of sites - it isn't going to happen. My friend, there are millions or websites out there but all of them use, essentially, just 4 search engines which are based on the main airline reservation systems. The other thing people forget is that there are only so many planes that go from A to B. Each airplane has 200 or so seats on it and of them only, say, 20 are very cheap. If a plane has 200 seats and it has 200 humans booked on it, it is full and all the searching in the world will not find a place - and certainly not a cheap one. Go and see a travel agent. If you ask a website for A to B it will give you A to B - what it will not do is think out of the box to solve your problem. I am not saying a travel agent will get you a cheap seat but by seeing one they are able to look at the "big picture" and so be able to tell you if you are wasting your time - or have a alternative solution.
