Long haul flights are particularly tedious but best to look at it as simply a means to and end and try to put your mind in neutral! Every hour you fly bring you one hour closer to your destination!

To pass the time there are just the usual things to do - read, listen to music, watch the in-flight entertainment, try to sleep.....Most importantly stretch your legs whenever you can to keep the circulation flowing.

Hope you have a great time in Australia!

Wow you lucky thing! I've done this trip twice now and both times we have had a stopover on the way. It depends on who you are flying with as well.

Take a brilliant book with you, one that you can't put down. Reading takes up a lot of time and you'll kill a few hours that way. Try to get yourself and end of aisle seat as well as you can then get up and walk around a lot too. Drink plenty of water as you will get very dehydrated on the plane. This may make you visit the toilet much more but that in itself makes you get up and walk around which is very important.

I would also take some munchies, when I flew with JAL to Australia they weren't too good at feeding you in between meals (I am ALWAYS hungry on flights). I flew with Quantas the second time and they gave you little goodie bags when you got on.

Watch loads of movies, (again depends on who you are flying with) most of them have relatively recent films on.

I know it is boring as anything being on a plane for a length of time, but it's well worth the wait!!! Plus you should have a stopover for a couple of hours so that will break the tedium up.

Also, take a deck of cards or a small travel game, so many people rely on digital media these days that you'll realise how much fun it is to actually play a real game with a real person.

Lastly - have a brilliant time in OZ - am insanely jealous!

I've been on some long flights
1st. don't wear tight fitting clothes
2. bring a book, magazines, mints.. head phones. the flight ones are not that well fitting..
3. sleep if you can.. and stretch your legs when possible.
4. watch the movie, or listen to tunes.
5. chat with your seat buddies
6. sit back, relax, and try to have fun..

If flying without friends it can be long and boring. You are either the type who will like to talk the person beside you o the plane or you're not. depends on them too. There is entertainment like movies and games and you can always bring a book. There is also radio to listen to. Sleep too.

Otherwise I advise you avoid heavy food and drink before flight. Avoid alcohol. Drink plenty of water. Exercise your feet and ankles and move around plane every so often. Wear light clothes and comfortable shoes.

The plane should have good in-flight entertainment, and it will need to stop someplace en-route. I normally try to stay awake when it would be daylight at the destination, and take a handful of sleeping tablets otherwise. Its very good to stretch though, and to walk around a bit.

Also, wear comfortable clothes. Take your shoes off. Take eyedrops, spray moisteuriser, wet-wipes. Drink lots of water (buy a bottle in the terminal, after security). Take a magazine and a novel. Download a few podcasts you want to catch up on. Download a podcast about the destination.

Hope you get to sit by someone nice.

You will sleep for a lot of it but try to sleep during the Australian 'night time',it will lessen the jet-lag for you. Change your watch to their time as soon as you get on the plane. You will have many movies to choose from (even in economy class) and take a good book too.Walk around and stretch your legs regularly.Just hope you are not sitting near to some noisy kids like we once were, trying to sleep when some brats were shrieking and running up and down was a nightmare, the parents seemed to think they were cute.
I think they should be banned or given their own closed off area in the back. Enjoy your holiday, not all parents are as iresponsible as those we came across(it's only happened once), I'm sure you'll be OK.

Depends who your flying with but some airlines have really good in flight entertainment. But definatly take a book, your iPod and whatever else, take a walk around every now and again.

Your going to be glad to get off though!

Most long haul flights have at least one or two stopovers on the way to the final destination. That means you're not going on one 21 hour flight, you're going on a few shorter flights. It's all in the psychology!

Books, DVDs, games and the rest are all good ways of passing the time if you get bored - and you should DEFINITELY do lots of walking around whenever you can.

People watching is a great way to pass the time if you're the creative type! I write stories in my head. I choose the prettiest woman and the ugliest man and marry them off then give them a whole life together all in my head. I play "hunt the animal in the cloud shapes" - anything to take my mind off the fact that I'm in a tin can 31,000 feet about the ground.

I also try to take some sort of project with me. I like writing and tapestry so a notebook and a canvas keep me very happy for hours.

When all else fails, a herbal sleep-aid relaxes me enough to get some sleep.

Have a good flight and a great trip to Oz.

Good question. I've never been on a plane that long. Read, take a portable DVD player or port some movies to your memory card of your PDA. Join the MHC.
