The Kitten in Clothes

I booked a flight on Qantas, but have to fly American for part of it - which counter do I check in at?

I am flying Toronto - LA on American Airlines, then LA - Melbourne on Qantas, but I booked the whole thing with Qantas and didn't choose American, was told Qantas uses American as their carrier for this route.

So when I get to Toronto airport, which airline counter do i go to check my bags in with all the way to australia? (just transiting in LA for an hour)

The reason you are flying American for part of the flight is because Qantas does not fly into Toronto. American and Qantas are part of the OneWorld alliance. Make sure you sign up for a frequent flier account. When you arrive at the airport, go to the American Airlines ticket counter. You should be able to check all the way to Melbourne so you should be able to get your boarding pass for the first leg of the trip any other leg and the LA to Melbourne segment. That way you do not have to check-in again at Los Angeles. Your luggage should check all the way to Melbourne so you do not need to pick up your luggage and then check them in again. You will see your luggage once you land in Melbourne.

go to which ever airline your traveling on for that particular leg of the flight.

I doubt there is a Qantas counter in Toronto. Go to the AA counter. They will check your bags through.

IF you are flying AA chceck intot hem and they will put your bags right through to Aussie, and on the way back you will to pick up your bags in LA and drop them off, it is a easy process. I have flown from Toronto to La to New Zealand about 5 times. Also when you fly into LA you will not have to change terminals because you will be in Terminal 7 and your gate will be literally right across the hall. Their is no Qantas desk in Toronto. They are just allied with AA like Air Canada and Air NZ

yep, you get your boarding passes from AA in YYZ

You go to the counter of the airline whose plane is actually flying the route you'll be flying. In your case American Airlines, they will also issue you your boarding pass for your Qantas flight and check your baggage all the way through to Melbourne. You'll clear US Customs and Immigration in Canada before you leave, when you get to LAX you'll be landing at Terminal 4 which AA uses and is right next to the Tom Bradley International Terminal, Qantas uses both of these terminals. You'll already have your boarding pass, you'll only need to clear security, read the message board to see what gate your flight departs from and proceed to your gate.

Check in with AA. They will check the bags through to Melbourne. Flights between US and Canada are treated as Domestic. When you get to LAX you might have to check in with Qantas but your bags will have been checked through.

First go to American and after that go to Qantas!

aflumpire
you will have to proceed to the American Airlines desk, as I dont think there is a Qantas desk in Toronto.

You will have to find out what the flight number is for the American Airlines flight (NOT the 4 digit QF____ number); as they are not likley to display it on check in screens.

Or even easier, arrive nice an early and find the AA desk that is going to LA at the time that is displayed on the check in board.

All you have to do is ask for confirmation ("is this also QF____") and they should be able to say yes or no. Your bags should be checked right through to Sydney.

You should also get your LAX-SYD boarding pass in Toronto; so you should be able to walk straight to your next gate unless you are changing terminal.
