Get a seat nearest the front of the aircraft to help reduce the effects of any potential turbulence. Try to fall asleep during the boarding process/taxiing/takeoff. Check out this book: http://www.askthepilot.com/book.html
I travel frequently and all of these things help. I also try to get a window seat so I can watch my approach into the landing strip - gives me a sense of empowerment when I can see where we're going! |

If the trip is short, it's not so bad. Try noise-cancelling headphones. maybe even a portable dvd player.
If the trip is long, then you're probably going to another time zone. Don't sleep for a day before the trip, that way you will sleep a lot on the plane. |

i have travelled allover many a time, Spain, Corfu, teneriefe, Germany, Cyprus, all back and forth many a time as i have lived in these countries for a number of years still do, and the only thing i like about flying is that it is so much quicker! it takes us a day to go see my mum in Scotland if we drive but 3 hours by flight (and car journey) it is far safer to fly. try not to worry honey, just think you are going in a big bus!! |

I HATE flying but usually fly about 4 times a year so it gets a little easier. What works for me is music, magazines and earplugs. I hate the engine changes and the earplugs help with that. I watched a programme about air travel and they compared turbulence like travelling over cobble stones!!! |

Bring plenty to listen to and read (remember that during taxi, take-off and landing, you will not be able to use electronic equipment, so a good, absorbing, relatively mindless book is good).
Try and get to the airport early to minimise stress from rushing, and to bag a seat nearer the front. This can lessen the feeling of being crowded in on busy flights.
Watch the cabin crew. They have done this a million times, and are not scared. They are going about their business as normal, even pouring out scaldingly hot drinks. Imagine how mundane and safe it is for them to do that.
Avoid caffeine the day of the flight. This will just wind you up and leave you breathless.
Take a bottle of water on board with you (you will need to buy this after security). If you feel anxious, take small sips from the bottle. This will help prevent minor episodes of hyperventilation.
If you do find yourself hyperventilating, then you can use the airline sick bag to breathe into, to bring your breath back to normal.
Take a guidebook of your destination with you. It always helps to get enthused about the reason why you are putting yourself through this - you have an end in sight! |

I too have this same problem. I have flown many times, but I don't like it and I get very nervous on a plane. The ways I calm down are these: I listen to music with headphones, it relaxes me.
Also get a gameboy advance or something like that, you will get into a game and not even think about the flight, last time I tried that, the plane was almost landed. Good luck and just remember, flying is the safest way to travel. |

Theres not anything that will settle you, especially when the plane hits turbulence and drops 50ft a second, and i certainly wouldn't fly this time of year, with all the rain, typhoons ,and the rest of the bad weather!!! |
