Educate yourself on flying. Once you read about how safe it is (for example, google "turbulence" and you will find a great web site a pilot authors where he does Q & A with many anxious fliers) - he explains every sound a plane makes, the fact that turbulence can't hurt a plane, the physics of flying...it will definitely make you feel better to understand better how it all works. I fly twice a week for work, and a drink on my Thursday night return flight definitely helps, but I can't do that on Monday mornings! Good luck.

Just playing, maybe you should talk to your Dr about anxiety meds just for flights.

try taking some sleeping pills, or maybe bring a hobby to help you forget

Take something (alcohol OR sleep medicine -- not both) just as you're about to board to put you to sleep through the whole flight.

I always sit in window seats so I can look outside and feel less claustrophobic. If it's the height that scares you, get an aisle seat so you feel like you're just in a big room or something.

Also, educate yourself on how safe flying really is. There's a great statistic that more people die falling off donkeys each year than die in plane crashes each year. It's always much much safer than driving.

When I found out that it was impossible for me to be knocked out cold and transported to the plane on a gurney, I spoke with my physician and he prescribed me Valium. I also took a good book and held on to my husbands arm very tightly. Best thing to do is relax and not sit by the window. Hope this helps a little. oh, the flight that I took wasn't bad at all. I don't know what I was afraid of.

Read a book

SolMan
Do something that will take your mind off of flying. Listen to music, bring a movie with you, read a book or talk to someone near you. Don't sit in the front or back of the plane, as those are the places that tilt the most on take-offs and landings, and don't sit by a window. Try to get a seat over the wings. I don't know if you're old enough to drink, but if so, have a drink on the plane just to relax. Don't drink to excess as this will make things worse.

Best of luck.

Well, a very simple way that I think works is to read a book.
But if that doesn't work you can always get a portable cd player or something and get those cd's in which they play soothing music, that'd help.

And another way is to simply sleep! I know, silly. But for me it works!

Happy Travelling:)

get drunk

Jean
I have the same problem, too.
What I do is just listen to my ipod and close my eyes until we are in the air. It always helps me.

I don't have a problem with flying, but I do have a problem with motion sickness. Whenever I fly I always take Dramamine or its equivalent, and that knocks me right out. If you're asleep you won't have anything to worry about. Good luck!

Lance
Don't fly.

nicce
I looked at the first answer and please....how immature. No you do not get drunk. You just listen to CDs or have something there to entertain yourself with. Like a video or something. DO NOT LOOK OUT THE WINDOW OR EVEN THINK YOU ARE IN A PLANE, It will be done before you know it. Or take a nap.

Try reading a book on the flight or try watching a movie or listening to music. If that doesn't work, try sleeping.
