Do certain flights let you use your phone while in air? I really just need to know if it is okay to text message while flying. |

I believe you can't use your phone period unless the plane is going down.
Then what would you text "Mayday Mayday flight 762 is going down? Opps! by the time you get that out it's cancel Christmas anyway.
Seriously, Operators of commercial airplanes have reported numerous cases of portable electronic devices affecting airplane systems during flight. These devices, including laptop and palmtop computers, audio players/recorders, electronic games, cell phones, compact-disc players, electronic toys, and laser pointers, have been suspected of causing such anomalous events as autopilot disconnects, erratic flight deck indications, airplanes turning off course, and uncommanded turns. Boeing has recommended that devices suspected of causing these anomalies be turned off during critical stages of flight (takeoff and landing). The company also recommends prohibiting the use of devices that intentionally transmit electromagnetic signals, such as cell phones, during all phases of flight. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission already prohibits the use of cell phones during flight. In addition, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued Federal Aviation Regulation 91.21 to make operators responsible for governing the use of portable electronic devices on their airplanes.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from passenger-carried portable electronic devices (PED) on commercial airplanes has been reported as being responsible for anomalous events during flight. The operation of PEDs produces uncontrolled electromagnetic emissions that could interfere with airplane systems. Airplane systems are tested to rigorous electromagnetic standards to establish and provide control of the electromagnetic characteristics and compatibility of these systems. However, PEDs are not subject to these same equipment qualification and certification processes. Though many cases of EMI have been reported over the years, with PEDs suspected as the cause, it has proven almost impossible to duplicate these events. Boeing has participated in several related activities and has revised its all-model service letter for concurrence with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circular (AC) on the use of cell phones while airplanes are on the ground. However, operators and their flight crews are ultimately responsible for deciding whether to allow the use of PEDs. |

I don't think you can use text messaging on planes. |

As long as your can do it without using your cell phone - Yes.
Otherwise, NO.
I like the ones from people that say "they've done it and haven't crashed"...
I wonder why the ones that've done it and have crashed never say anything? |
|

Lauren

probably not because the phone still has to send the message so it uses the same thing as calling someone. perhaps. |

Maple is the only one on here it seems who got it mostly right. The only part that was incorrect was that when they said they think you can use the phones when the plane is landing. This isn't true. Phones are supposed to remain off until the doors open.
Wow though, I’m shocked by all those that have said "Yes you will be fine; I have done it and never crashed before".
All I have to say is I hope to god I am never on a flight with any of you who said it is ok to turn your cell on!
Let me ask you all this, when the pilot says "Please turn off your cell phones".....then he says you can turn on electronic devices, EXCEPT for cell phones must remain shut off. Why in the world would you think that it is ok to turn it on to text message???
There is a reason they tell people to keep this off. Or do you think they are telling you oh for the heck of it or because it is fun?
This messes with there electronics and communication with the towers. So just because you haven't "crashed" doesn't mean you "can turn them on". Instead of feeling the need to keep 24 hour contact with the world down below for the safety of all on that flight be smart and leave your cell phone OFF! I think you can survive in the time being. |

yes, when the pilot announces it's okay to use such devices. |

you're not supposed to but people still do it. texting still gives signals which couullddd possibly interfere w/ the plane's signals. |

you kind of answered your own question.......if you are not suppose to use your cell phone a.k.a. turn it on, why do you think it would be fine to text message???? anyway, no as far as i know why wouold they allow it.........they make it impossiable for you to use your cell phone while in air because then you are forced to use the phones in the seat infront of you so you can spend $1.25/min and they can make money.......i hope that helps sorry if i was being a jerk......good luck |

You probably can't get a signal unless you are taking off or landing. You are supposed to turn off your cell because the frequency can interfear with the tower sending messages to the pilot. You might be able to text discretely, though. |
|

Unless you plan to text message while falling out of the plane when it misses a message from the control tower while you're text messaging and hits (God Forbid) another plane, your best bet is to turn off that cell phone and just get your messages when you touch down. Trust me, life is better than death. |

yes you can......once the pilot announces that it is ok to turn on electronic devices.....you can not whilst taking off and landing....but even when you can it may be hard to get service..... |
