Honestly, to sit on one feels a bit like sitting on a bus. Until it starts moving. And then it still feels a bit like a bus, except faster. You'll know when you get off the ground because all of a sudden you can tell there isn't any friction under the wheels; it's really smooth. You gain altitude fairly quickly and you'll be able to tell you're leaning back a little. If you're brave enough/lucky enough to have a window seat, look out! It's so amazing to see the ground dropping away. Cars and trees go from looking normal sized to little dots so quickly. It might be a little rough as you gain altitude, but to me it's exciting. You might pass through clouds-- they look just like fog. And then all of a sudden, you're above the clouds looking down on them. It's so awesome!

As far as the flight attendants and such go, they'll go through the emergency procedures before you take off. Point to the exits, show the oxygen masks, etc. Just like in movies. They make sure all the carry-on luggage is packed away in the overhead compartments, all purses and such underneath the seat in front of you, your seatbelts on properly, your seats locked in upright positions (seriously, just like the movies!). And then, depending on the airline, you usually get pretzels or peanuts and a drink during the flight.

The landings are what typically make people nervous, atleast the people I've talked to. It's one of my favorite parts though. The pilot will announce they're about to descend, so you know to expect it. If you look out the window, you'll see the ground get closer. They might tip the plane one way or the other in order to turn to the runway. The ground gets closer... but unlike the warning on mirrors "Objects Closer Than They Appear".... really the ground is still further away than you think! You might feel like you're about to run into a tree or something, but I promise, you aren't. The wheels will touch ground, and it may feel like you bounce into the air again. Once the wheels are on the ground, they put on the breaks, and you'll really feel yourself slowing down suddenly. Then they'll taxi around and let you off back into the terminal.

A few tips for your first time flying:

Take gum! Chew it during takeoff and landing. It'll help your ears from popping so badly. I've never had too much problem, but some people do.

Don't carry much with you. You probably won't use half of it, and it makes it easier to get on and off. (And come through security, for that matter.) I usually take a book and a jacket and an I-pod, although some planes have Sirius radio built into the armrests and supply you with headphones. Some people like to carry a change of clothes with them incase their luggage gets lost, but unless you have a lot of layovers I wouldn't worry about it. I've never had them lose my luggage, and lots of times when they DO lose luggage, they end up sending it to you by taxi.

Wear slip on shoes. Really, that's more for security reasons. Lots of airports require you to take your shoes off anyways, so the easier you can make it on yourself, the better.

And lastly.... this is really important.... ENJOY YOURSELF! Some people don't like flying, or do it so much it's nothing special, but it's really one of my favorite things in the world. It never gets old. Like I said, seeing the world drop away like that... it's just amazing. I have a photograph I took over the wing... you can see to the end of the world, really! The horizon line is way off in the distance, you can actually see the curve of Earth. And the sky is such a clear dark blue. Absolutely Stunning.

NOW TO THE QUESTION U ASKED:

I listen to some music from a C.d. player, Ipod, Mp3 players .. etc. This way, you'll be concentrating on your favorite songs and lip synching it versus thinking about the flight itself. I still have really bad anxiety attacks myself, which I get really nausea and vomit. I know. It's gross. I'm generally afaird of heights and flying makes it just worse for me, but listening to songs makes it better for me. You won't even notice that your flight took off. And try to relax.if its a night flight, you can sleep...even on day flights too...take some snacks, books and maybe a therapy pillow. Flying is really the best and safest way to travel. Maybe take a photo of u and ur friends that might calm u down. Dont worry, they check EvErYtHiNg!!!! at the port, get some friut snacks, and on the plane chew them very very slowly w/ ur eyes closed. that always helps me. Gum will also work. I always take some lotion so i dont get dry. I used to be scared, but i took a mini mini fan and i just relaxed and that was it. take deap breaths, and it will be over be4 u know it!!don't be nervous. Flying is fun, get a seat by the window so you can look out at all of the clouds and stuff. The view is very calming. tip, if they offer movies- watch them, the funnier the better! but it's no big deal, you might enjoy it.I usually try to sit by a Nun or a Priest----just to add that extra piece of luck.

What i do is i bring along a comforting pillow or book and i read while waiting for the plane. When i get on the plane, i always grab a blanket and sit down next to the window. If you still feel scared, i always close my eyes and think of a nice warm sunny beach with your mother there just hugging you or singing to you, something comforting like that. Try not to let go of the thought until you are in the air. Then try talking to the person next to you, or read. Sleeping on a short flight is always good because you never really realize how long the trip actually was. Just relax and try not to drug yourself, because drugs could alter your thinking when you get off of the plane.

its really not that bad. focus on what you are going to do once you get to your destination and maybe read a good book while on the flight. If you're worried about crashing, the likelyhood of getting in a car wreck on the way to the airport is actually much higher than actually getting in a wreck on the flight. I hope that you enjoy your trip.

flying is the safest mode of transportation. just take a nap on the plane . if it gets to bad before you go contact ur doctor and he will give you sleeping pills or something

I know, flying is scary. Just take a huge sleeping pill, and sleep through the whole flight. Thats the only thing i think you can do.
I have been on a plane plenty of time my longest flight was 11 hours half way across the world. Just dont think about it. Pretend your at home on your bed, before you know it it will be over.

Don't be scared ther eis proberly alot of people feeling the way you are. Air hostesses are used to people feeling scared so dont't be scared.

Same here. When I was 10 I went away unaccompanied. I remember I was so excited I went to the loo first up and ya know, loud noises freak me out. That stewardess that led me to my seat never told me the loo was loud! Anyway, I flushed it, got freaked out, ran outside the loo and told the stewardess and she LAUGHED at me! When she left I went round to the back and said I felt queasy. Two stewardesses (Lucy and Carolyn were their names) and asked me if I'd like a plastic bag. I got to sit on the stewardesses' chair for a while and the two stewardesses started talking to me to take my mind off the toilet flushing (and offered to flush it for me) until I had to go back to my seat. They did the emergency procedures, that made me kinda freaked out because it made me keep on thinking the plane would crash! The rest of the flight was OK, except for the pasta (SORRY, plastic) kid's meal they served.

My best advice would be to try and relax. I know it must be hard, but... that's all I can say. Play the games on the aeroplane and watch the movies. If you are farsighted and forget your glasses, just walk around a bit. Walking around helps a fair bit, just don't get into the stewardesses' way! If you're wondering when the plane will land, there might be a feature on your plane showing the Flight Path, showing where you are and how long it takes. How long is your flight? Mine was around 5 hours, from Perth to Singapore. I've heard it takes longer to get there than it is to get from Perth to Sydney!

Another thing you could TRY to do would be think happy thoughts or funny thoughts. I had some dream once that I went to the loo on the plane, flushed it, ran out of the toilet "for my life" and bashed into one of the stewardesses, who was serving food, who dropped her tray, and the food spilled out all over the floor and the stewardess had run out of that meal so she had to run and get another one and I tripped her up. Odd.

fear of flying is common.....but bear this in mind before you go....as long as you use a reputable firm you are more likely to be killed by your trousers

ok so i am guessing your question is what to do if your scared of flying or are you scared of flying and the answer is no i am not scared of flying.

Chloe
Contact your doctor. I used to be terrified and got some pills that took away the anixiety for the flight. Now I fly without them. I'm still nervous but I know the pilot wants to go home also at night.

Sianny
just remember that its the safest way to travel. your more likely to get killed by an avalanche than in a plane accident. chill out and enjoy the ride!!!

Fernando
fear of flight is a common feeling, but flying is one of the safest way to travel.

The most dangerous part of commercial flying is the drive to the airport. Go see your Dr., tell him you hate flying and ask for a small presciption to xanax or valium. Take some of that, and you will feel fine, and most likely sleep from runway to runway.
.05 milligrams of xanax ought to do it.

Dont take the stuff until you get to the airport...it will hit you in 20 minutes!

James
take a large vallium before the flight and you will be fine

Georgie
I got over my fear of flying by taking a four hour flight on my own this very day last year! But if youre worried Id go to your GP and see if he cant give you something to take on the plane to relax you a bit.
Good luck

Corneilius
Its not unusual to be scared of flying, It seems such an unnatural thing to do.

But learn-ed men less than 100 years ago confidently predicted that anyone who travelled over 30 miles per hour on a train would die.

This seems totally irrational now but statistics show that you are far more likely to be killed driving to the airport in a car than you are to be killed flying in an aeroplane.

Yet you are not worried about getting into the car to go to the airport despite this being far more dangerous than flying.

Once you understand that your fears are irrational then you might be able to overcome them. Don't let your life be ruled by fear

The simple answer is STAY HOME AND DO NOT GO ANYWHERE THAT INVOLVES FLYING!

Second answer is: Well, there is no second answer. Just stay home and do not go anywhere that involves flying.
