Depending on when you want to travel and how long you want to stay, you might want to investigate if there are any last-minute fares available. You can sometimes get a package deal if you're willing to travel for the weekend - and even if you don't need the car or hotel it would come with you can still often save big on airfare.
Try www.site59.com. Don't forget that Orange County (SNA), Ontario (ONT), Long Beach (LGB) and Burbank (BUR) are viable alternate airports to LAX. I've seen fares into/out of alternate airports as much as $200 cheaper than LAX.

Try including alternate airports in your search as well (check "search nearby airports at kayak and the similar option in farecompare can be found after you search for a flight).
Both of these sites search multiple airlines on the dates you specify to give you the cheapest price. They search Southwest and Jetblue as well, two popular low-cost carriers.
