I recently took a LONG plane ride and brought my own food. Why did the FA's complain about it.?

They also told me I should throw the food away since it wouldn't be fair to the other passengers who wouldn't pay the amount they charged for a drink and small amount

They want you to buy from their food so they can make some money.

they want you to spend all of your money on the flight. and it makes them look bad to other passengers when you bring your own food like you don't trust them or something.

Did it smell? I don't think they care if you eat as long as you aren't eating something that disturbs others.

Fred
Please specify the country and airlines where this happened. In the US, you would have a legitimate complaint to lodge against the airline, since US airline passengers are typically encouraged to bring their own food in order to keep the airline's costs low.

azdancer56
I dont think that they can tell you to throw your own food away.

Faith S
You have basically answered your own question. They want passengers to pay for extras, instead of bringing their own on board.

tsbr1963
If you are telling the truth....WOW!

I would write a letter to the airline company...and copy the local paper in on it too.

I have brought food on planes for years...planes all over the world too...and have never had a problem. I would think if it were booze, or if it were really really messy...then they might have a problem. Other than that?? The f/a should have kept his/her mouth shut.

Write a letter!

They usually don't allow plants or that sort of thing, because it could introduce a foreign species or a disease or something that might mess up the ecosystem.

chickenlittlecookie
it might happen on budget airlines that try to make that extra buck from selling u the crap they have on the flight. Some airlines are considerate enough to put it in their rules that you're prohibited to bring your own food. though on long haul flights they would usually serve something that is already included in ur ticket.

the loophole - say you're diabetic or have a heart condition and are on a strict diet and regime. but don't go eating candy and cola of course.

PinkTulips4Me!
I was on a United flight once and this guy was eating a sandwich he bought at the airport and nobody said anything. We all wished we had one but I didn't complain and the FA's didn't complain either. What do they expect.....starve through your 8 hour flight and pass out? I always get there early and eat at the airport. Sorry it happened to you!

mybrilcareer
Probably your food was smelly, messy, or noisy. You can bring food as long as you don't annoy other passengers.

ernie_fergler
I have never, EVER heard that. What communist airline were you flying?

Princess Buttercup
If there wasn't some sort of obvious customer service level reason behind the request (you are a noisy chewer, the food smelled bad, it was an offensive food item, someone was allergic to it) then that is very very bizarre. I fly frequently and regularly bring my own food on the plane. I've never once been told not to.

I know that several airlines are removing or have removed peanut service from their flights due to allergies. If it was something like this, I could understand, but they should have told you.

Contact the airline and find out what their policy is. Then, write a complaint letter quoting what you were told (if they say it's fine) or a letter protesting their policy. Good luck to you.

skifaster6
The food you brought probably had a strong or bad smell to it and that is why they did not like it.

On a long flight, and even on flights that just last a couple of hours; I always bring my own food. I have had some complaints, also. I just tell them I am on a special diet and must eat what I brought. I bring organic food with me and to me it is a special diet because you're sure not going to get healthy food from an airline. They don't bother me after I tell them that. I hope this helps.

Yea,

Once I butchered a hog on a flight to Nova Scotia. I brought my own garbage bags for the entrails, and they didn't seem to mind.

This would NEVER happen on a US based airline and I highly doubt any airline in the modern world. Ive been in the airline industry for years and have NEVER heard of any flight attendant telling you that you couldn't bring food on board. Update your explination and tell us what Communist Airline you were flying. The ONLY reason a passenger would be asked to discard any food item would be if it was offensive in odor.

I brought food on a short flight before from Buffalo to Minneapolis/St Paul 2 1/2 years ago. The soda and water was free during the flight, there was a meal being served in first class that smelled pretty good from my seat, it was a flight over the dinner hour and a connecting flight from the Canadian west coast. I never had any complaints from anyone. I even offered to share my hard candies I brought with my neighboring passengers to be considerate.
I have only flown once in my lifetime but I have never heard of that happening before.

That is absolutely unacceptable. You should not be required to throw anything away that you purchased. Also, there's no rule against bringing your own food on-never has been, and many airlines encourage that you do exactly that, since their food offerings (however bland and cardboard-ish) have been declining in recent years. As for it being 'unfair' to the other passengers, well that's a crock. The food court is open to EVERYBODY, and if they wanted something they should have darn well gotten it.

Max
I wish I had seen this yesterday. never thought about bringing own food. great idea!
