I remember that in the 60s and 70s flying was quite glamorous and comfortable. Were the aircraft more comfy?

I have been flying internationally since 1964 and I seem to remember that flying was fun and quite chi chi.
Were the aircraft seats wider and was there more legroom in those days?
What makes it seem so much more pleasant and glamorous back then when compared to today?

i think its because at that time flying places wasn't as readily accessible as it is today.

back then it was kind of special to fly somewhere... now we just take it for granted as just another form of transportation.

its kind of sad really... i love to fly.

Flying in the 60's and 70's WAS a lot more glamorous. Business travellers had much bigger expense accounts and leisure travellers usually went by car-- if they were going by plane, it was a special occasion. Airlines didn't have to cram as many seats into a plane to turn a profit and could afford to pay lots more flight attendants to take care of the smaller number of customers. These days you're packed in like sardines and there will be 2 flight attendants to take care of 100 people. No wonder it was much more pleasant back then!

The romance era of flying is gone. It's sad, but the world we live in today is all about saving time and money. No one is willing to shell out extra bucks for a flight that would come with food, movies, and other in flight entertainment.

People want quick, inexpensive, and efficent flights. Companies like Southwest and Jetblue make flying cheaper, however, they do make it less glamorous.

It's almost like taking a city bus with wings now. :(

The seats were a little bigger and the Stewardesses were very friendly and HOT (that alone made flying much nicer). They gave you more attention and cared if your were comfortable!!

drewhend is right...not everyone could afford to fly then....we take it for granted nowadays.

I've been a Flight Attendant for 30 years. I remember the old days well. During the lean years (recession) planes were more comfortable because they were far less crowded. Of course, we served hot meals on just about every flight but airline food was always the butt of many jokes.

As far as comfort goes. Today airlines are squeezing in more and more seats. On the other hand, newer aircraft are being fitted with personal TV screens, Premium cabins often come with fully reclining seats,
the new Airbus 380 (Singapore Airlines) is fitted with actual suites with a double bed and flat screen TV. Other airlines are installing showers and a spa on the A380. Boeing's new plane wil be luxurious too.
Older aircraft from the 60's and 70's can't compare to the newer aircraft now coming onlne as far as comfort goes.

I think the pitch of the seats was greater then than today. The discount and main carriers are packing them in like sardines in cattle class. Lets talk about service as one poster said there were actual meals not a stale bunwich that you have to pay $10.00 for. And you got service with a smile and not a snarle

I work in the aviation industry and it is all about squeezing the last penny out of everything. I have heard through the grapevine that there is an airline in the UK that has banned their staff from charging their personal mobile phone at work because the airline is squeezing the margins that much.
