That Qantas flight is an AA codeshare flight so you should have no problem checking your bags all the way through. AA 1553 from Toronto arrives at terminal 4, and Qantas flight 12 departs from terminal 4. I don't think you need to go through customs because you don't need to exit the terminal, which means you don't officially enter the US. If you had to go from terminal 4 to Bradley, then you would have to go through customs since once out of the building, you can leave the airport. But in your case, you may stay in the transit area in terminal 4.
By the way, since this is a valid connection set by the airlines, if you miss flight QF12, they can put you on flight QF108. |

I think I might have answered another of your questions before... maybe not-
1:40 is cutting it a bit close only because delays happen, but you will preclear US Customs in YYZ before you head out of the country. Since American is a Qantas travel partner, you won't need to claim and recheck your bags. Just head on over from your inbound AA flight to your Qantas flight. AA and Qantas both operate into and out of Terminal 4 at LAX so you won't have far to go.

If you check your bags all the way through to Australia and receive both boarding passes in Canada you should be ok, if not you may have a very difficult time making your flight. On most flights from Canada to the US, you will clear US Customs and Immigration in Canada before you board your flight, your flight is then very much like any US domestic flight. Depending on the airline you're on, you may have to transfer to the International Terminal at LAX, and will have to go through a security check, they do have shuttles that will take you quickly between terminals at LAX and sometimes the walk can be very short. One hour and forty minutes should be ok as long as you don't have to collect your bags and check-in again at LAX. |

Since some of people did some research about terminals saying that both AA and Qantas are arriving and departing out of terminal 4...1hr40 is plenty of time.
You luggages will be automatically transfered from AA to Qantas. |

What carrier are you flying from YYZ to LAX? If it is in the same international terminal as Qantas (Either terminal 3 or terminal 4), then you should be OK.
See here for the list of who is where at the terminals in LAX:
http://www.lawa.org/lax/terminalMap.cfm
If not in the same terminal, it can be tough to get from one terminal to the next, especially if you have a lot of hand-carry baggage, as you have to get onto a shuttle, I believe....
It will also depend on how on-time your flight from YYZ to LAX is. Judging by the number of delays occurring recently, I would not think 100mins is enough buffer. I might try to get an earlier flight out of Toronto, if I were you.
Further, I am American, just flew from YYZ to LAX through Chicago...I had to go through customs IN TORONTO, but remember, LA was my final destination (Yes, there were Americans staffed there to clear my bags through customs and view my passport). So, do not fret over the other fellow above me about their 2.5 hour ordeal in Chicago's customs.
However, you are merely TRANSITING in LAX on your way to Aussie, so I seriously doubt you would have to go through customs in LA. As a transiting passenger, you are not forced to go through customs until you arrive at your destination; in this case not until you reach down under. |

I honestly don't know if you actually have to go through customs .. if you do then that might not be enough time because you'll have to go through customs, then back through security again... which for LAX can take awhile. |

It's been awhile since I've been to Toronto but when I flew from there to San Francisco, I pre-cleared Customs in Toronto and simply scampered off the flight like a domestic passenger. Wish that were true everywhere. Yes, it was "real" customs with U.S. Customs officiers working, etc.
I hope they didn't mess with that after 9/11. Contact AA or check this site for more info;

You are changing carriers, so you have to recheck your luggage. You should be OK, but don't waste any time getting coffee or nonsense like that.
You can reduce you luggage to carry-on to save time, but you'll be OK anyway. |

That should be long enough - hopefully your Canadian carrier won't be delayed! You will still have to go through customs, but it's pretty straightforward. Good luck! I live in Australia, BTW :-) |

I would allow as much time as possible. Coming back into the U.S to Chicago going through customs and security took almost 2 1/2 hours I almost missed my connecting flight. I would say you need 3 or more hours. |
