You aren't afraid to travel in a Car, I'm assuming.
That's because you know enough about how cars work and are familiar with them.
People are afraid of the Unknown.
I suggest you read about airplanes, what makes them fly, etc. then it won't be such a big deal to you. Then when you hear strange noises, like flaps, landing gear, etc., you will know what is going on and it will be more exciting because you know about it.
tens of thousands of aircraft takeoff and land every day; safely.
I would be more concerned about the drive; trusting thousands of strangers passing by you are paying attention, not drunk, etc. than I would be of two highly skilled pilots.

There is more risks involved driving in cars than driving on an airplane. I say just do it! |

Don't look out of the window, then you won't know how high you are. Cars are far more dangerous than planes - I bet there are loads of people on Y/A who have been in a car crash, but not many that have been in a plane crash. |

I felt exactly the same before i flew for the first time. But i bit the bullet and went to Germany. And now i won't travel any other way. The best part of it is the taking off and landing, the rest of it is boring. |

i was terrified the first time i flew... it was a acrobatic stunt plane.. i kid you not... it was 9 hours old... and like a fool i said yes...
i was terrified.. but being a man thing, i didnt want to bottle out... so i held on.. tight, and didnt look down... i ws sat in a fiat panda seat, witha 1mm sheet of plastic between me and certain death... and we cleared 500 feet... by the time we reached 3500 i was pretty sure we werent actually going to fall out of the sky... and i relaxed... stil full of trepidation... but i actually enjoyed the flight... it was just a 40 minute hop..
when we left the other aerodrome the bugger floored it and did a 500 feet climb from standstill... im a hairy biker, i love going fast, wow what a rush.. but to climb 500feet in a few seconds, 0 to 100mph and 3500 feet in a couple of minutes... seemed like seconds...
trust your pilot, trust the laws of aerodynamics, trust the flight engineers and mechanics... they are all professionals... pop a vallium and enjoy the rush..
failing that, goto your local airfield and ask for a short flight.. most flying clubs will do this... they get to show off thier pride and joy, and you get to fly...
its safer up there, than it is down here...
enjoy your holiday... |

As strange as it seems try and make sure you fly from one of the major airports eg manchester, gatwick, luton. And choose one of the larger tour opperators and make sure they are using their own airline on that flight- your travel agent will be able to help you with this. This maximises your chance of your flight having an "air bridge" to get on the plane. This is simply a tunnel like bridge connecting the terminal to the plane. you just walk down it onto the plane. You wont even see it and it will be just like walkin into, say a cinema.
As for nerves while on the plane and while waiting, Bach's rescue remedy is wonderful stuff - just a few drops on the tongue works wonders. And the bottle is small enought to be allowed through security and onto the plane.
While at the airport give yourself plenty of time- you dont want to add to it by getting stressed by time pressures, then keep yourself occupied, have breakfast, go shopping (another reason to choose a big airport)
And as silly as you may feel let the flight attendants know you are nervous they will keep an eye on you and make sure you are ok.
Enjoy yourself once you made that 1st flight you will be back for more!!!! |

I was terrified like you too before I got on a plane for the first time in 2005, but honestly its fine, if you feel really nervous the air crew will give you an aisle seat so you don't have to bother looking out the windows, by the time you get on the plane and listen to whats been said by the air crew, get yourself settled and have a good old nosey round to see who else in on the flight you will be in the air and well on your way, don't wait until you get to 48 like I did before you get on a plane, honestly it will open up a whole new world to you and I will bet you will be wishing you did it ages ago just like I did, good luck and enjoy your holiday in Spain. |

I don't like heights but i don't mind flying , Go see your doctor who may prescribe you a mild tranquiliser.
Honestly it's no big deal when i flew the first time i was nervous but i had my kids with me and couldn't show it in front of them, we took off and within 10 minutes i was fine and I'm sure you will be .
The flight to Spain is about 2 hours 15 minutes by the time you've had your meal watched a bit of TV your there , go for it and have a nice holiday.
I'm assuming your in the UK if your not the flight times will be different. |

ive been riding on planes since about age 8 and ive jsut gotten use to it, if your afraid of heights dont sit by the window, and there are puke bags in the seat if you get sick, and they offer ginerale to sooth ur tummy and crackers/peanuts/pretzels and if you get a long trip, which to spain is overseas so with the time change you will probably get lunch dinner or breakfast, and dont worry about it crashing!! |

I was terrified first time i went on a plane , and still am today! But its one of those things you need to do to go places. its an achievment when youve done it. the only bad part ifound was coming down to land , other than that its ok , try some herbal remidies to calm your nerve beforehand. Maybe even sleeping pills so you dont know anything about it. but seriously its not that bad. no differnent from being on a fast train , apart from 40.000 feet perhaps. |

There really is no way to stop being afraid unless you accept that you are safe, or take some sort of drugs. The odds are you won't get harmed on an airplane, you are more likely to get hurt walking then you are flying. |

Get an aisle seat, and don't think about being in the air. Just sitting back in an uncomfortable chair, with lots of strange noises, and constantly getting knocked around by stews and fat-*ssed passengers. Eventually, you'll get so annoyed by other people you won't even realize you're off the ground.
A fear of heights doesn't apply to flying. All psychological. Otherwise, I'd be in trouble everytime I take-off. You can't pay me enough to get on a ladder, but I'd willingly fly everyday. |

You can go to your doctor and get some tranquilizers...Thats what I do sometimews to take the ease off...You are safer in a plane then in a car did you know that...It may get a little bumpy cause of turbulance but it will be ok...

Look at it this way. Half the time you cannot even see the ground so you don't see how high you are. You don't have to look out the window. You are more likely to die on the way to the airport than in the plane. Watch the movie or bring movies to watch. Play cards, and also read. |

British Airways and other airlines have a scared flyers club.
Contact the airline or travel agent and ask for help!
It really is a very safe way to travel, and the fear of heights won't bother you because Vertigo only affects you when you look down. So don't sit near a windo... stay in the aisle, keep busy with a film or book, and enjoy your flight.
Have a great holiday
Also, BA supports the fear of flying course run by Aviatours... and they can really help - the link is below.
Below is the link for British Airways information on Fear of Flying.

all you can do is bite the bullet and get on that plane. its not a big deal once your in the air unless you have a serious phobia. lots of people get drunk so they sleep but its fun to look out the windows. and yes i dont like flying either. |

i am prety sure that you rlocal airport will do a course for people scared of flying. i had an aunt who was terrified and she went on a course run by our local airport and now she flies ok.... and trust me if they could fix her they can fix you.....
flying is actualy the safest form of transport. much of your worry is psychologicaly unfounded...
also your doc can give you something to relax you before your flight.
good luck and have fun

I am just as terrified and I usually have a slight anxiety problem during takeoff, especially because Im terrified of heights. but if its any help airplanes are much much much safer than cars and turbulance is actually important for the plane. They're just airpockets that are like little bumps on the road. Think of how many planes take off a day. Look at magazines, listen to music, bring a portable DVD player, chew gum, and you should be there before you know it. |

dont think that because it might crash. |

Theres only probably 40 or 50 crashes a year, your chance of hitting the ground at 500mph and making a crater the size of a house are pretty small. If a wing falls off at 4 miles up you'll have blacked out with the blood being forced to your feet so hard that they explode long before you hit the ground. If the plane explodes its minus 60 up there and theres no air, you'll lose consciousness and freeze to death in a couple of minutes - again long before crater time. Dont worry about it, get on a plane, theres only 2 possible outcomes - you get there or you die, but like tossing a coin I guess. |
