If an obese person takes up two seats on an airplane, should that person have to pay for two seats?

I think the person should pay for the additional seat but not the full price for the extra seat. This is because while both seats are being taken up, it is still only one person. That one person does not get double baggage allownace, double food, double customer service and does not consume double the effort and attention that two people take up. The extra seat should be half price or something like that. There should be a better solution to accomodate those people who need extra room. Maybe there could be a section of the plane that has larger seats. Sure they would cost a little more but its better than having to be embarassed into buying 2 seats. I understand the extreme obese need a lot of extra room but those are the people who have trouble sitting in chairs and cars. I think this is a concern for just plain old just chubby folks. You don't need to be obese to hang a little outside your normal seat on an airplane. Airlines should not be able to get away with having seats the width of a 100 pound teenager. I've sat in wider stadium seats than what they offer on an airplane.

Yes, they should pay for all the seats they take up.

Airlines prices are by the seat, not by the person. Infants, who don't take up a seat, are usually free. A person who wants or needs two or three seats for himself must pay for them all.

A baby has to pay for a seat (for car seat)... that obese person better has to pay, too- otherwise I don't think it's fair.

I find it more of a problem if the person is just taking up a part of my seat. The worst situation I was in the person put up the armrest before they sat and there was no way that thing could come down again. They may think it is not fair to have to purchase an additional seat, but it is not fair to use my space either.

I wish people would buy an extra seat if the regular ones can accommodate them. Maybe everyone could be required to sit in a test seat at ticketing and if they lap over the seat be required to have an additional seat, politically correct or not. Ones persons freedom only goes as far as it doesn't infringe on another persons.

I have been seated by large people several times and thus endured an uncomfortable flight. I'd guess the ticketing agents dont ask a person to take an extra seat unless they are seriously morbidly obeese. I do like the idea of a reduced rate for a second seat requested ahead of time (say 25% of the ticket cost).

Yes they should. Maybe at a smaller rate, but you are right...the airline is losing money on that seat. Or maybe we could just stick them in cargo.

They DO pay for two seats. If they have not notified the airline in advance and paid for 2 seats, at check in the agent will make the decision and if it's decided that they require 2 seats, they have to pay for the additional seat.

Yes fatass people should have to pay for that extra seat.Why? becuz they aren't normal they deserve to pay, and they should have to pay for the crane assistance off of the plane.

There are some domestic airlines that require purchase of 2 seats. The determination is made by the gate personnel. If you know you are obese and you know you usually extend to another seat, you should mention that at the time you buy the ticket. If you wait and have to buy one at the airport, you will be paying premium prices for that extra seat.

well if i was obese that much and did i would be embarrassed and wouldnt fly, and if i did i wouldnt want to pay for two seats, but since im not id say yes because its there choice to go on a plane, well i guess its hard to see what im getting at I feel strongly about both; yes and no

Most definitely, these days economy class seats are barely large enough for an average size person. There's probably no worse situation on an airplane than to a have an overweight person seated next to you taking up not only your armrest, but actually pouring over into your space as well. I believe most economy class seats are 21" wide, and if you can' fit, you can't fit. I know many airlines do charge very overweight people for two seats, not only because he or she can't fit in one seat, but also for the comfort of the person(s) seated next to them. It's unfortunate, but airplanes do charge by the seat, and in air cargo, by the weight. But in defense of the overweight people, if you have to pay for two seats, you should get two meals on flights that serve meals!
