I am a wuss...I get an upset stomach everytime! But my husband and son love to fly and have no problems at all. My son has taken several flights of 10-12 hours and no complaints. |

First off, try not to worry or be nervous. I know that seems hard not to, but the more you worry and the more nervous you are, the scarier it'll be. I believe that knowledge is key, and once you know the procedure it'll be a lot less scarier for you.
Make sure you get to the airport with plenty of time to check in, go through security, and fine your concourse and gate. Rule of thumb is to allow yourself 2-5 hours before your flight. Call the airport ahead of schedule to see what their wait time is for that specific day.
Make sure you have all your documents with you (picture ID or passport, visa if needed, and ticket). Also make sure that you are not taking any forbidden items with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
Now you are ready for your flight!
When you taxi, you barely feel the plane move at all. At this point the cabin crew will tell you all you need to know about what to do in case of emergencies and such.
When the plane prepares for liftoff, it starts to go really fast down the runway, and then within 45 seconds you are up in the air. Things may seem a little wobbly at first, but that's just because of moving through the different altitudes. Your ears will pop as you climb through the altitudes also. (chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure.)
Once you are in the air, things will feel smooth. You will hear the humm of the engines, but that's normal, nothing to worry about. I actually find it relaxing. If there is turbulence, you might feel the plane wobble a little bit, but remember, planes are designed to withstand this, so take a deep breath and try not to think about it.
When you are approaching landing, your ears will pop as you descend through the altitudes (remember: chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure). You will feel the plane slow down and the cabin crew will prepare you for landing. When the plane touches down it kind of feels like a short jolt, and then you hear them cut the engines off and the plane slows down pretty fast.
From there, the plane will taxi to either the gate or the designation where a bus will pick you up. You wait for the plane to decompressurize a few moments before they start letting the passengers out. That was your flight.
To entertain yourself:
- Bring along a few book, magazines, puzzles (such as crosswords or Sodoku if you like those).
- Bring along an iPod, MP3 player, or CD player to listen to music.
- A laptop is good to have as you can play games on it, connect to the internet, and get any work done that you may have.
- Try talking to the people next to you. Sometime you will meet some really interesting people, and forge friendships
If you want to see what a flight looks like from the cockpit, I took some on one of my trips with my husband (he's a pilot). Anyways, here they are if you're interested: http://flickr.com/photos/jamie_hassen/sets/72157594552581082/ |

It's not scary, when you take of it slants a little bit and you go back in your seat but otherwise you can't really tell you're flying. |

Air travel is by far safer than traveling by automobile. It is not bad once you get in the air, the take off and the landing are the only 'scary' parts. Good luck with it. |

Air travel is far safer than even travel by automobile. There is one fatality for every 1 million miles traveled in a car versus 1 fatality in every 17 million air miles traveled. You have a better chance of winning the Lottery than you do from perishing in a plane crash... |

Ive been on a few times, and it was a little nerve rattling at the beggining. The worst part is taking off to me. All i did was sit back and keep my eyes closed. The rides themselves were always smooth, and landing wasnt too bad, though you may feel like your stomach is still in the air for a bit afterwards. GL and try not to worry, safe journey |

It's really not as bad as you think. Make sure to bring some gum on the plane, because as you take off and when you're about to land your ears will be popping a bit, the gum helps. Also, don't get freaked out if it's a bit windy up there...the pilot might come on the intercom and announce that "there is some turbulence" that just means its a bit windy in the area you're at...but nothing to worry about, planes are designed to be stable in the air...you might feel a bit of rocking, but don't think you're gonna flip over or anything :P. Just enjoy it! As soon as you land, I know you'll feel silly for being so afraid. Oh, and before I forget..bring some air sickness pills as well.. I tend to get a bit nauseous in the air. And remember, you're more likely to get in an accident on the way to the airport than you are on the plane :). Good luck! I wish I was going on a trip! |

Air travel is safer than crossing the street.
Because of my job, I fly frequently.
In 10 years of flying across the World, I have never once had cause for concern.
If there had been any problem with any of the aircraft that I have been on board, I would know before all the other passengers and probably before the flight attendants. |

Just be wary of the fact that your ears/head may go through some strenuous pain. Other than that, bring a laptop or MP3 player, kick back, relax, and enjoy the peanuts! |

Took my 80 year old mother on a trip - first time she had flown. She thought "it was gonna feel like you were going 600 MPH." Actually, she thought it was a little boring. When I first flew, I did not like take-offs and landings - but, now, it's the only way to go. My longest flight has been 9 hours to the Netherlands - that was kinda boring. |

take off is just like going super fast in a car at a tilt upward.... after that it is smooth sailing... chew some gum though cause your ears are going to pop. the landing is my least favorite part.... its just a litte bumpy but over before you know it.
my son LOVED flying ..... he flew his first time when he was 6 |

Don't worry! You'll be fine...Just make sure to drink plenty of water, get some music, and get something like a Word Search or Crossword book and just relax. A book would be good, too.
My first flight was actually from the United States to Europe, which trust me, is very odd. On a plane for the first time and I had to be on it for eight hours! I love the feeling of taking off and landing, it just feels great. (This is from a person who was scared of heights before she went to Europe and later got over it while in Italy scaling down a castle wall). |

Ask somebody what its like, also if you know a pilot, they can
tell you how a plane flys. The more you know then you can understand whsts happening.I love to fly but, on long trips it can be tiring and boring .Bring something to do if your on a long flight. |

Oh ye! make sure you chew gum the whole time or your ears will hurtlike hell!

I would suggest going to see your doctor or chemist and have them give you some tablets that are going to help you relax. Make sure you have things to keep your mind occupied whilst flying like a good book, magazine or ipod.
The first time being in an aircraft can be quite scarey (it's completely normal to feel that way) but it's an amzing adventure at the same time. Relax and enjoy! |

been there done that - BUT!
you have of a better chance to get in a traffic accident - than an airplane accident
think of it as a BIG bus that gets off the ground - that's all it is
and we are the herd they are transporting - MoooOOOOoooo
make sure you take gum to chew on the way up to altitude - and when you make your descent to land - that will help your ears 'pop' (and airports do not sell gum - so bring it with you)
last trip - saw a cloud that looked like the Sphinx - WOW
the views will be spectacular! And if you fly at night - try to get a window seat - the lights are superb! actually, I try for a window every time I fly now!
enjoy your trip - best of luck! |

I'm just like you, I was friggin terrified of airplanes!! But they're not that bad, really! Just relax and you'll be fine. The scariest parts are taking off and landing but they're really not that bad.
When the plane is taking of it speeds really fast down the runway which can be a bit nerve-racking, but the next thing you know you're air borne! And then landing, I think it's really fun! Especially in daylight, you can just look at all the fields and ground below you and it's really interesting... yeah, I'm rambling now, lol.
Just remember to relax and don't be nervous, it's not as bad as you think it'll be! |

Get into your car. At a stop sign, floor your car...considering it would be a good place to do it. The feeling you get when you snap back into the seat, that will be double (or so) on the airplane. Then, go on a interstate and have window opened just a hair, that will simulate the wind noise. Then hit a pothole or speed bump and then hit the breaks. Thats what the landing will feel like. |

To be totally honest with you I still get butterflies in my stomach. Once I'm in the air and the g force is gone I calm down a bit, but I'm not a great fan of flying.
When I was 20 years old I took my first flight and we had an emergency landing in Salt Lake City. I think that's what caused my anxiety.
I usually take a nerve pill and I do fine now. Don't be scared, look at it as an adventure!!! A prayer couldnt hurt. ;-) |

Don't be scared; air travel is safe, and for some people it is fun! When the plane is ready to lift off, it gets a little loud. You should yawn because your ears pop a little. You might get a little weird feeling being up so high, but then you get used to it. When you land, same process, just yawn. Then, it's all over! I don't think it is anything even CLOSE to a roller coaster! |

Well, first you get into your seat. It's small and uncomfortable, without enough room for your legs, and the fat people on either side of you smell bad and spill over the armrests. The flight attendants demonstrate the plane's safety devices, which frankly will not help you at all if the plane crashes. Then it taxis out onto the runway, and the fun begins.
The plane goes faster and faster, and then it arcs up in the sky at an incredible angle. You are pressed into your seat with three or four gees. Eventually the plane levels off, the seatbelt sign goes off, and everyone starts worrying about terrorist hijackers. The plane will occasionally hit areas of warm air that cause turbulence, and anyone not strapped into their seat will hit the ceiling before falling to the floor. Bring chewing gum to keep your Eustachian tubes open, because the change in air pressure can play havoc with your sinuses.
When the plane reaches its destination, it dives toward the airport like a Stukka bomber. Oh, yeah, you want your seatbelt fastened at this point. Your guts will jump up into your throat, and then the plane lands with a bone-jarring crash. (Not a literal crash, just kind of a *smack*!) You disembark, and discover that your luggage has been lost. |

You walk onto the plane, sit down, buckle up, look out the window and see how HIGH you are above the ground, hope the plane doesn't break down and you will land in no time! Have a great trip! |
