I had the same issue, basically you need some form of ID a driving license should be ok, but some Airlines have different rules, as security is high, I carried mine to stop any uncertainty.

You don't officially need a passort for Ireland, but because of 911 all airlines to Eire now ask to see your passport for identity and security reasons |

I can give you a definitive answer on this one as the question came up in a pub conversation. I was sure you didn't need a passport, however someone argued very strongly that you did, so I checked with an Irish Governement department, can't remember which one now.
Anyway, as a citizen of the United Kingdom, according to Irish Governmental travel rules you do not need a passport to travel to Eire/Southern Ireland, however, and isn't there always one, certain Airlines will insist that you have a passport, others will accept a photo driving license.
So in short, it depends on the Airline you are travelling with, so best check with them to be on the safe side.
For travel to Northern Ireland, part of the UK, you definitely do not need a passport or photo ID. |

You need some form of photographic identification. It needn't be a passport. |

You need a passport for all flights on most airlines, even when not crossing countries.
As you are going into another country you will diffinately need one. |

It depends.
You will need photo id to board the plane. Your airline may or may not allow a drivers licence - check.
If you are a British citizen you need no documentation to enter Ireland.
If you are an EU citizen you need a passport or national ID card.
If you are a non EU citizen you need a passport and possibly a visa.
However, you are unlikely to be checked on entry automatically - if you do need to complete visa formalities it is your responsibility to do so. |

Are you actually flying the plane? |

Northern Ireland you won't, but take your drivers licence because they may ask for photo ID. Southern Ireland you will need a passport.
It's always best to ring the airline and confirm though, then you have total peace of mind.
Enjoy xx |
