If you are about to board a flight, what happens if you get to your gate and at the end, the gate has closed?

and what would you do about it (just out of curiosity)
Additional Details
i.e. if your flight to Denver on the screen says "boarding at Gate 28", your just finishing a cigarette and when you actually get to the gate, the gate has closed.

That means you got to the gate too late to board the aircraft. You then have to contact with the airline to make arrangments for a different flight. There may be a penalty fee if missing the flight was your fault.

I would be really worried... I am a pilot and the flight cannot exactly leave without me...

But as a passenger, and I do fly as a passenger quite often, I would understand that I cannot expect the airline to take a delay and cost themselves thousands of dollars because I was too lazy to get to the gate... I would very politely ask to be put on the standby list for the next flight...

If the time is before the scheduled take-off time, I would immediately ask someone at the gate to use the walkie-talkie, or shout down the jetway "one more! don't close the door!" The gate door can be reopened, the airplane door cannot. Whenever possible, the airlines want to put you in that empty seat and send you off, instead of having to deal with you after the flight leaves.

Well you need to be more specific. It could mean the gate is closed because you missed your flight or it could mean they havent started boarding yet and you have to wait. If I missed it I would have to try to get the next flight to wherever I was going and if they hadnt boarded yet Id wait in line to get on until I do

You've missed your flight. Most airlines close the gate (and door) ten minutes before push off from the gate. If you ask really really nicely, they may let you on.

If I missed it, I would immediately try to get put on the next available flight.

If you already checked-in, the gate agent will call your name on the intercom many times before they actually close the gate. Also, they have to pull out all your checked luggages because of the fact that you are NOT on the plane. In case it happens, try to explain the situation nicely to the gate agents, it might helps. Pls never argue with them; They have the right to deny your ticket.
Tips: don't trust all the electronic departure/arrivals info board as it might wrong or not up-to-date. Pls. go straight to your gate first to make sure you know where it is then do other things. Remember gate also might change at the last minutes.

It all depends. If the plane is still there you have a small chance of getting on. More then likely you will have to stand-by for a later flight, and if it's a busy time could take you all day, or several days at that.
