If you were on a plane going the speed of sound and walked from the back of the plane to the front, would?

you be walking faster than the speed of sound?

The Tank
Relative to the ground you'd be walking faster than the speed of sound. This would make unaided conversation with an earthbound partner rather difficult.

However, on board the aeroplane the ambient air would be stationary relative to the aircraft so you would still be able to have a conversation with your fellow travellers.

Sound travells in a very different way from light. The speed of light is not relative to the source so the above examples wouldn't work if you were to try flashing signal lamps at each other on a spaceship travelling at the speed of light.

What a guy!!
Your forward motion would be faster than sound. You'd be walking at normal speed.

yes, your ground speed would be greater than that of the aircraft, so you would be moving faster than the speed of sound, as long as you kept walking:D

Penfold
Speed is always relative to an object, You would be travelling faster than the speed of sound relative to the ground. You would not be relative to the aircraft.

Servette
walk slowly, i couldn't hear you.

?
Keep Up!

ALOPILOT
theoretically, yes, but because the environment in an airplane is self sustained, you would not really feel the effects of supersonic travel...

lilostitchfans
well, not really. you will feel like your walking at a regular speed but you are moving ahead of the people sitting in the back.

yeah, although the planes does not fly with the speed of sound, cause 0.96 Mach is the speed sound, airlines fly with 0.87 Mach at most:) and yeah, u'd be considered faster than the plane from a point of view but not from another
