you absolutely have to turn off your phone during take off and landing.
inbetween i'm not quite sure.
i'd say trust the airplane mode, my phone has that too.
your gonna want to bring something that entertains you definitely,
any psp's game boys, whatever's out nowadays.
and believe it or not, it can be fun to draw when you're that bored, so bring a notebook and pen :]

that's all i can think of for noww.
make sure you've got a music player of some sort!

try to get there early and then you can request to sit beside your mother.
Bring like a dvd player, book, computer, or magazine to keep you occupied. Although with such a long flight you will probably have a complimentary movie.
and it is safe to put your phone on airplande mode

A book or two should keep you preoccupied. This is also a good excuse to keep your seatmate from chatting with you throughout the flight. Of course you won't do that if he's drop dead gorgeous. In which case, you may not want the flight to land at all.

generally, you must turn off all electronic devices(cells, hand held games,etc during takeoff+landing. The pilot will let you know. As far as the long ride, relax! airplane travel is very safe, you'll be fine. You will prob see a movie or two, you can get headphones or bring your own to listen to music. I fyou read, bring a book or magazine. Try to get a window seat, 1st flight is really neat to look at stuff on the ground from 30,000 ft. and try to figure out what it is.

bring a portable DVD player... magazines... music.. gum so your ears dont pop... and a lot of people switch seats if you ask them to, so you will probably be able to sit next to your mom if you ask. and i would turn your phone off.

Usually there will be about two new movies that they will show during the flight. Also you could bring a book, a listening device, or just sleep. It will go by faster than you think. Also, if you ask your stuardess, you will probably be able to change seats if the person sitting in the seat you want to sit in will switch. Don't worry, it won't be as bad as you think! =D

don't be scared, it's not bad at all. i normally even forget that i'm on a plane. just make sure you keep occupied. bring a portable dvd player if you have any, an ipod, magazines, books, etc. and YES it is okay to keep your phone on airplane mode just not on take off or landing. so make sure you turn your phone on airplane mode, THEN turn it off and then when they say you can turn electronic devices on then you may turn your phone on and it will already be on airplane mode. and make sure you turn it off when landing.
