Im scared of flying!?

im going on a 10 hour flight on thursday to america which im looking forward to but im terrified of flying!!

knowing there is nothing below me for 30,000 feet terrifies me, and with this recent hole in a 747 im more worried!!

THE PLANE IM GOING ON IS A 747 TOO!!

any advice? i have travel socks for DVT btw and i understand flying is incredibly safe and im far more likely to die just sitting here on the computer.
Additional Details
actually its true planes can land without any engines on isnt it?

they just glide and slowly fall. and i think the planes are going to be REALLY safe now because of that incident the other day, everyone's going to be checking their planes throughly

the qantas plane was older and it was from a very very long flight(more than 15 hours before the stopover in hong kong) and they landed fine, the only thing that happened was that a few people threw up once they got off the plane. and now since that happened procedures of checking planes and safety checks are going to be much more thorough. and yes flying is so safe, even if the engines fail in an almost impossible chance the plane will still float and nothing would happened, and everyone has a lifevest and there are life rafts

Me too babe. Deathly afraid of flying. To be honest, i am going on a flight to England from Chicago & i plan on taking sleeping pills. Strong ones. I dont know what else to tell you, but thanks for asking this question. I will be looking back to see if anyone has any suggestions, but i still think i am going to go with the pills.

You will be fine. I say a prayer before I leave, and when I land in my destination. I love flying. The only time you "feel" movement is really when you are taking off, and landing. When you are in the air, it feels like your just sitting there, and not moving! I would suggest taking something before you go it may help. Or sleep on the plane.

Hello, Nick! I have to tell you I made the flight myself several years ago. I never have liked flying, but I had a chance to talk to some really interesting people during the flight. That is partly why a film is usually shown as well, so that you can spend some of the time paying attention to the movie. You have to try to not think about the other disasters and concentrate on the fact that your plane is a very safe one. Even with holes in them, those planes landed!

even the plane with the hole in it, landed safely.

you will be fine... I am pretty sure about it, I am going to fly to America also, but on Wednesday, and I am so not looking forward to the 10 hour flight, omg.. that is going to suck sooo much... but yes it is safer to fly then to go on a rollercoaster, lol...

Hope you have a great time in AMERICA =D!!!

if you are feeling anxious abut flying buy some Kalms and take 2 about 30 mins before boarding, it helps with nerves...oh and take a boiled sweet to suck on when you take off otherwise your ears will pop lol..

---been on plane too many times to remember---

It's not flying you should be afraid of - it's crashing!

The 747 is a time honored aircraft which you shouldn't be afraid of.

Although it never happens unless it is an emergency situation, airplanes can land without engines, but not if they are completely missing. The aircraft is designed to be aerodynamic with every shape that penetrates the air. Any disruption is hazardous.

An airplane NEVER uses its engines at full power unless it is an emergency once again. If they did that during take off the tarmac would get torn up. In fact they usually only use 4 engines at half power.

just think that much over 1.000.000.000 people are flying every year, and nothing happens at all . lol cant understand why you are afraid. Do you know how many times they check if everything is alright? Let me give you some advice , Just try to sleep or play psp but do not sit more than 5 hours its dangerous. The only thing you have to worry about is the start its about 10 seconds it is going to shake you a bit.
Please dont do that do yourself. I know you can do it
