In a plane, is it prohibited for people to switch seats while in the plane?

For example, say there is an empty seat by the window and you were given a seat in the middle. Are you allowed to move to that seat or will you be stopped by an air hostess or one of the staff?

Also, if a you and a friend want to switch seats, are you allowed to do so?

If it is not allowed, can you please clarify the reasons behind this?

As long as that seat is empty or th person who has it doesnt mind, thats fine.

If you and your friend are seperated someopne who is alone might be glad to switch to get out of the middle.

Just ask, and 99 percentof the time the flight attendants are glad to help

While technically not 'legal', no one really cares as long as you are not flying coach and attempt to move up to Business or First Class.

It isn't prohibited at all. It's perfectly legal, just do it if the conditions permit.

They'll never figure out who was sitting where when they have to sift through the smoking hole in the ground anyway. It doesn't matter.

You usually have to start out in your own seat until the flight takes off. Once the seat belt sign is removed you can change seats if another one is available. However, you should discuss this with the flight attendant, so she can authorize the change.

If no one is sitting in the seat when you have taken off and are able to walk around get up fast and get the seat. You can also ask a person next to you if they would consider changing seats so you can be near your friend.

Alot of time unless it's a aisle to an aisle or window to a window they won't because of their preference.

One lady refused to do it for my sister so I kept coughing & sneezing & yes on her.LOL She did change not long after. LOL

Think outside the box.LOL

It's up to the crew (which in turn generally take their directions from the airline). They may or may not let you move.

There are no legal restrictions on where you may sit, with one exception: In the United States, you cannot sit in an exit row unless you meet certain qualifications (able-bodied, English-speaking, big enough to open emergency doors, willing to help, at least 15 years old, etc.). This is imposed by Federal Air Regulations, and cannot be waived by the crew. The FARs also require that the seat in which you sit be equipped with seat belts (so you can't sit on the floor).

Airlines may often let you change seats in the same class on the airplane, but for obvious reasons, they generally will not let you change to a seat in a higher class (from Economy to Business, for example).

Whether or not it's technically prohibited is a mystery to me. I've flown back and forth between the coasts a few times a year for my whole life, my dad's an airline pilot, and I've never gotten busted or seen anyone get busted. In my experiences, the flight attendants are pretty lenient, and have even recommended to move to another seat if there are a few empty ones. Also, it is pretty common for, say, a mother or father to want to switch seats in order to sit near their kids, and nearly always, the other passenger is quick to oblige and switch seats. Also, if you want to switch aisle seat for center or window seat, I don't think anyone cares about that. I guarantee you will not get reprimanded for it, and if you do, the worst that will happen is that you'll have to sit in your assigned seat. But that's not going to happen. Bon voyage.

most of the time it is overlooked so you can do it. however it is an identification issue that is the reason. if the plane goes down and someone died while sitting in your seat the airlines are going to say it was your body. besides that they dont want people to be switching seats during flight... kinda like standing up on a moveing bus.

On most airlines it's frowned on simply because they use the seat numbers to keep track of the passengers on the manifest. If you want a window seat, just specify it before you purchase a ticket.
