Infant on a domestic flight? |
We are flying with our 6 month old son from LA to NY, 5.5 hr flight, United Airlines. We will be carrying him on our lap/baby carrier, cannot afford extra seat for him. Any idea as to whether some seats are more infant friendly than the others? Can we request such seats from the airline? |

Look on your confirmation to see what kind of plane you'll be on. Then go to www.seatguru.com and look up the airline/equipment. You'll be able to see which seats will best meet your needs, along with the seat pitch, size, and accessories (e.g., AC power). For example, you might choose to be near the lavatory - these tend to be less popular seats for business travelers, but far more practical for families with young kids as you can dispose of a diaper or clean a mess without waiting for the beverage cart to make its way down the aisle.
You can always request specific seats from the airline. If they are available, they will give them to you (unless it is in the premiere zone or exit rows). If you don't get the seats you want, you should definitely ask again when you get to the airport. |

If there are extra seats available on the flight then you can bring on board a child restraint seat (a car seat) as long as it is approved for use in aircraft. Most airlines prefer these be placed next to the window (for safety reasons if you need to quickly exit the aircraft). If there aren't extra seats the restraint seat can be checked at the gate. Most parents with lap babies like to sit at the bulkhead because there are no seats in front of them therefore extra legroom, but if that's not available then somewhere in the front is easiest because its difficult to manuever around the inside of a plane with your baby plus all of your carry-on items. You'll also be close to a lavatory, most come with changing tables. |

Front row seats.
And most airlines have special cots that strap onto a pull down tray on the front row. if you request one of these, you dont have to use it but you'll still get the extra space of sitting on the front row and also hey are pritty handy to put stuff in like your own little close to hand storage/shelf. And they fold up and down easy so you could put it away yourself. |

For domestic flights, they usually don't have designated seats for parents carrying a child on their laps. But, from personal experience, I have found the front seats, the ones that have no seats in front of you, to be the most convenient ones. You get some leg room and also gives the child the opportunity to sit/stand in that area.
On international flights, you can actually request for that same seat up front as well as a bassinet for your child. |

When I flew with my son, he was about 5 months old. We were not required at that time to have a car seat on the plane, but now I think it's changed. Check with your airline.
Car seats can be checked with luggage. I used a baby carrier so my hands were free. He could see my face (It was a front carrier) He sat on my lap during take off and landing, but that was 10 years ago. |

bulkhead seats are usually roomier since there is no seat in front of you. |

It depends on the flight we flew from Italy to chicago 12 hours and on British airways they have special seats for mom or dad and babys. We didnt pay for a seat for him because at the time he was 6 months and knew he would not sit in it, but on British airways they give you the first row of seats so you have more room you can always ask plus they gave us this little car seat thing for free so i didnt have to hold him the whole time too. |
