Is Gatwick Safe? (I'm really scared of flying)?

I am terrified of flying and I have a flight on Saturday and despite the fact that I fly roughly 4 times a year I can never get rid of my fear which does not stem from anything to do with a plane, no I know that a plane is a safe machine and can glide without engines etc. The thing that scares me is more to do with terrorism and the fact that it could happen to me. I have gotten even worse this time though due to the fact that over the past few months the airport I am going from has had bad press over its security with headlines such as: http://www.gatwick-airport-guide.co.uk/blog/2008/07/gatwick-security-shortcomings/, http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/3829752.MP_s_knife_missed_by_airport_security/ and http://www.economist.com/blogs/gulliver/2008/10/gatwicks_bomb_embarrassment.cfm. I'm flying to Dubai and well 7 hours in a plane is a long time I just don't know if I can do it this time. Is Gatwick security good? Because what I have read has just scared me so much.

The security at Gatwick is excellent. Have had to pass through there quite a few times and they are very thorough.
Re your 7 hour flight. Maybe go to a doctor, explain how you feel regarding the flight and they might give you something to help you relax.

gatwick's security is fine (I should know I helped train them).
if you let terrorism scare you that's them winning that one of there aims putting people of flying.
In todays world terrorism is as much part of every ones as it has been in years gone past, only now it is more in your face with all the tv, radio and newspaper coverage.
Your right it could happen to you or it might not I had friend's who were working at glasgow airport when it was attacked last year and one now work's in iraq.
Every one has a fear of flying in a plane(mine is getting dvt) but I try not to think about worst cause if I do then my fear has got the worst of me.
Flying today is safer than it has ever been with new technology it will be the safest for of transport for years to come.
If you are that scared go to your doctor and ask for something to knock you out for the duration of the flight.

melon chap
are you being silly, sarcastic or what? well firstly gatwick is as good as any other and secondly, do you really not have anything else better to do than thinking about why 'terrorists' might come and want to attack YOU spicifically?

Two previous comments sum it up. How many people died last week as a result of terrorists? And the week before etc. Also the guy who mentioned little kids kicking the back of your seat. That's all you have to worry about.

Well let's put it this way - how many people died there last week? and the week before that? howabout the week before that I wonder? hmmm none at all? what does that tell us?

And don't flatter yourself that the terrorists are waiting just for you.

Gatwick fine ....bloody terrorists you have to worry about

Security in London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and London Stansted is very good. You don't need to worry, everyone is checked even before they get on the plane, and inside the airport there is guards that have been given the authorisation to kill anyone that is going to harm another person.

Also remember, the staff also are working all day in the airport. And if they thought that there life was at risk then they wouldn't even go into work.

Flying is the safest form of transportation, there are more chances that you will be killed in the car on the way to the airport rather than being blown out of the sky.

The only terrorists you will have to worry about are the age 1-7 years old, kicking your seat back and screaming.

Or adults that pick their noses, have a bad body odor or being just neanderthal in their behavior.

Think about it, would the main terrorists today (who target airlines) want to bomb a flight headed to Dubai? I think they go for European countries and America.
