You're more likely to die driving to and from the airport than you are on the plane.

chinrasu
Be rest assured, flying is the safest mode of travel.

harryhotun
Yes it is the safest form of travel mile for mile. You should have confidence that those flying the aircraft are extremely well trained professionals.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of flights, that carry hundreds of people at a time, each and every day...
How many fatalities have you heard of?
Flying is safer than driving.

Q 'Captain, does this type of aircraft crash often?'

A 'Generally only once, sir!'

let me start by telling you that flying has been proved to be the safest form of transport that there is you have more chance of being injured or killed driving or crossing the road look at it logically why are air crashes in the new the answer it that the are infrequent don't forget that there are a lot of safely rules applying to aircraft before the pilot even gets on the aircraft he has checked out the weather all along the route he is flying he has also had a good look all round the aircraft to check it is good order he has checked the radio is ok he has a long check list of things he must check before he can even start the engines and all the crew can only fly for a limited number of hours and are not aloud any alcohol for many hours before flying as well as being trained in safety on-board the aircraft their first concern is you the passenger

theres no traffic in the sky and there is nothing to crash into, by far the safest mode of traveling

Yeah, flying is safe. I guarantee it.

I fly a LOT, but have never been afraid. However, I often sit next to people who are.

You should think about the following:
1) it is safer to fly than to drive. Really
2) decide whether it feels better to sit next to the window, where you can see, or NOT. I would choose the window no matter what, and then close the blind if the view is scary.
3) often the people I know who have mild phobias about flying order a drink early in the flight. Just one, though, to calm down a little. An over-the-counter sleeping pill has a similar effect with me.

Flying's safe, it's crashing that's dangerous.

Sit at the back. When did any aircraft ever reverse into a mountain?

Mile for mile it's the safest form of travel. I used to be in the RAF and always feel confident on a civil flight - the aircrew are so well trained and trhe safety levels are remarkably high.

Me too i go to Florida on saturday and have 9 hours flying to look forward to (HELP). A good thing i always do is resist the urge to look at your watch, if you do you will find you have only been up there about 10 mins, hold out until you cant hold out any longer and you will be pleasantly suprised.. Take plenty of good stuff to read, try and have a kip and do loads of people watching. My hubby always tells me "its the safest form of travel" but then again he LOVES flying, good luck and enjoy.

Barbara Doll to you
I hope so

It is the safest form of travel by far. The strict laws regarding safety and quality are unheard of in any other form of travel.
I've flown all over the world and have never had any cause to think twice about this mode. Just realx, take in the pleasure of cruising above the clouds and have a great holiday

ah bless i know how you feel cos im the same, im going on holiday in 3 weeks and the nerves are creeping up on me already! my tips are have a stiff drink.... well it works for me lol try to relax i know its hard,,,, focus on where you are going and how much ul enjoy being there.... take sickness tabs..... and most importantly enjoy the expieriance i found that enjoying the flight really helped . i know easier said then done but goodluck ul be fine x

I'm no expert but the only way I can personally rationalise it is this; When a plane crashes it's huge news and it's brought to our attention. this is because it happens so rarely that it is big news, it's just that because most of us don't fly every say or week that this news starts to affect our fear of the unknown. However more people all over the world get killed by other transportation. If they reported every single road accident, whether it be car, bus etc the news would never end,and we are so used to it that it doesn't affect us. We are in more danger getting into a car than getting into a plane. yes it's scary because it's kinda unknown, and the noise and the sensations of take off, landing and turbulence but it is as safe as it possibly can be. i personally don't have a problem with flying, I think it's an amazing experience. But you can get on short courses that help you to overcome this, I think the airlines run them but I'm not sure. They start off with discussion etc, then you go in a simulator then you gomsee a plane and they explain everything before you go for a short flight. This could be helpful but they do cost. You could always take something on the flight to distract you like a book or mp3 player. i hope this helps and goodluck x

Yes, I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and NOTHING happened. Okay, once we had an engine reversal. Not a big emergency and I didn't even realize it happened! We had to stop and refuel once (again, no great event there). Oh, and one missed landing. Nothing to report there. We turned around and tried again. Nothing even scary!

Yes, I knew two people, one I had only met once, who died in a highly publicized incident. Sad, scary but in all my years, this was a one-time event. Many F/A's retire not even claiming that.

Out of the thousands of coworkers I met over my career in 5 airports, I did know a handful who died. One girl lost her life on a boat, even though she worked in the air!

Remember that there were 2500 planes in the sky the morning of Sept. 11th 2001. Even if you had been flying that day, the chances of being on one of those planes was infinitely small.

You can trust the pilots. I didn't always agree with them on politics or other issues (hey, what we talked about at 35,000ft) but I trusted them with flying. I never saw drinking problems and they were always very reliable and took their jobs seriously. The screening is tough and for pilots who don't want to take passengers, they can find employment with other types of companies like cargo. "Bags don't b***h" was their motto!

Most flying issues are related to control, or lack of. Explore that line of thinking. You don't see where you are going. You can't control what's going on... You know logically, it's not the flying. When I told passengers this, it helped and they agreed. We're in charge of so much in our lives; our families, our jobs, our transport, our fiances, it's difficult to "turn it off" and leave where we're going to someone else.
