It IS the safest way to travel ... however, I've thought about this as well ..

when you're on the ground, cars, trains, buses, whatever, and you get into an accident, chances are the severity of the accident won't be bad enough to cause any serious or permanent damage .. chances are the vehicle will take the brunt of the punishment ... in other words, incidents/accidents are at a much higher rate with cars, trains, etc., but chances are you'll survive ..
even with air travel being as safe as it is, if there's an incident in the air, chances of survival are so minimal that it's not even worth it to hope .. that's why you're afraid of air travel ... try to take your mind off of it by reading or listening to placid music ... honestly, it's not something you'll shake off, but if you have to fly, there are ways to deal with it ..

here's another suggestion .. if you're flying early in the morning or late at night or if your flight is long (4 hours or longer) try asking your doctor to prescribe a few fast acting Ambien for you ... you'll be out like a light and let your worries subside in your dreams

Statistically by far air travel is a winner hands down, you have a much higher chance driving to the local grocery store of being in an accident.. :)

The fear is from not having any control over the vehicle. Nowadays they will stay grounded for any weather problem at all, so you're in good hands, I fly all the time and usually I'm asleep before we even take off.. :)

yup. im terrified of flying, but i haven't died yet, right?

lildude211us
yeah, pretty much...especially if you are flying on an airline that serves the US and the EU.

It's an odds game, really. The odds of a plane crashing are vastly less than, for instance, a car crashing. While driving or riding in an automobile safely depends not only on your own abilities but also those of the "X" number of drivers you encounter as well as the various mechanical problems that might cause an accident or the uncontrollables like wild animals leaping out in front of you, taking a plane has fewer variables including pilot ability (which is strictly regulated}, the number of actual planes in the sky (much fewer than autos) and mechanical failures (which are also strictly regulated). Nothing is 100% safe. You could fly thousands of times in your life and then get splattered by a random drunk driver while you stroll out to get the mail. Just enjoy the ride.

I think walking is the safest way to travel, but flying is safer than driving , statistically speaking

Yes, in fact, the most dangerous part of flying is driving to and from the airport.

This may help, it is a free online "fear of flying" course:http://www.linkedin.com/in/akirlew

I used to fear flying, then I ended up flying every other weekend when I dated my wife long distance for about a year. I took my first flight with a friend, and then the next time I had to fly (out of the country by myself) it wasn't as bad.

It is scary flying I know! But you have more chance of being in a car crash than in a plane accident. Flying isn't actually that bad if you just don't worry about it, drink plenty of fluids ( i like to drink Tomato Juice as it hydrates me a lot) and just watch films or listen to music. Enjoy the beautiful view outside! That makes me feel a bit better lol.
