Is it a problem to only use the return flight ? |
What implications are there only using the inbound flight and not the outbound flight?
A friend wants to move to the UK and it is far cheaper to book return starting in the UK. |

Anytime a passenger no-shows any portion of a ticketed flight itnerary, the rest of the itinerary is automatically cancelled. To get back on, he'll have to pay the ticket change fee + any additional airfare, if (and it's a big if) the airline show any mercy. The cheapest nonrefundable and nonchangeable tickets won't even allow this if a passenger just no-shows without a documented reason (ie, on funeral home or hospital letterhead).
For cheqaper one-way international tickets, look at consolidators such as http://www.flights.com and via a search of regular, sale, and consolidator fares with http://www.bookingbuddy.com |

It's probable that when your friend turns up at the airport to use the return flight only, he/she will be refused and have to buy a full price ticket on the day.
Look at the small print, or better still phone up the company involved. |

If you don't use the first flight, they'll cancel the second flight. This happened to someone my husband knows. Has your friend looked into a round-trip ticket originating where he/she is versus the one-way? |

Typically if you do not use the outbound journey, you can't use the return journey. |

If your friend no-shows for the outbound they could cancel the return. Also, I think that kind of ticket may be what they call a 'cross-border' ticket and maybe illegal. |

If you do not show up for the first leg the ticket will cancel and loose its value. If you were to call and cancel the outbound you keep the value but cannot use the return. The airlines are proactive in catching the over fly tickets and will void the ticket. What you might want to do is bok a round trip and once in the UK cancel the return and use it at a later date and pay a change fee. |

NO way!
If you are *no-show* at the point of origin, the reservation *automatically* cancels the flight!
Why? To prevent *your friend* (and others) to do exactly that!
Long, but long time ago, it was allowed and/or not enforced! I am talking *Braniff* epoca! Long time ago!
Suggestion: Buy a one year R/T ticket.- |

No, this is tariff abuse and the IATA conditions of contract state coupons must be used in order. |
