Yes you can bring your laptop on the aircraft with you as your hand luggage. In fact the airlines and the TSA actually suggest that you bring those type of items as your hand luggage and not pack in your checked as they are less likely to get damaged.
The airlines also allow you to bring another personal item along with a laptop.

yes you can... and..if you can FIT the laptop into ANOTHER piece of carry-on luggage...it will ONLY count as ONE carry-on..and you can still bring another item on too!

Yes. Just take it out of it's case, and place it on top of the case when it goes though the x-ray machine.

Yes, at least domestically within the US, it is OK to take a laptop on as a carry-on. I'm not sure about international flights, but I don't see why not.
