Is it safe to fly with Russian Aeroflot?

I'm a British Asian, and heard about incidents of racial discrimination in Russia. A friend of mine , living in St Petersburg, also told me that many Russians are not friendly with people of colour.

Now I need to fly to South Korea for a business trip. Searching for flights, it turns out Russian Aeroflot has the cheapest fare.

Does anyone have experience flying with this company? Is it good enough in terms of the service and their passengers' attitude.

Their reputation is not great but that is based on the old Aeroflot coming out of the Communist era. Their domestic flights can still be on old Russian aircraft but International flights are on new modern aircraft. They've come a long way in the last few years and are pretty reliable now (they are my company's preffered choice for cargo) and I've flown as a passenger and it was fine - no problem with cabin crew

Moscow is becoming a gateway to Asia with a few airlines coming through it. They are also getting more used to people of colour, but racism towards Asians, mainly migrants from the republics, is a problem. It should be okay if you are stopping over on business. A colleague of mine (who is black) goes out and has no problems.

Check the aircraft type for the flight. It will be an Airbus or MD80, which means its less than 10 years old (probably less).

Don't expect anything to special at the airport though. There's a new terminal being built at Sheremetyevo but the current one is still a bit of a relic from the communist era - Okay though. Don't now about the other one (Domedodovo) but I'd guess Aeroflot goes through SVO for the Asian route

They have a very bad reputation, largely from before the post communist era in which the western governments loved to slag off the communists.

By and large they are pretty safe, just not quite as safe as say BA or QANTAS.

I personally wouldnt have a problem flying with them. Put it this way, how many flights of AeroFlot have you heard crash this year? None. How many flights a day do you reckon they do? Lots. So whats your chances of survival? Pretty high.

Dont fly by them I hear they are not a good airline to fly with.

Don't do it - Areoflot have no regard for H&S & cabin crew are often drunk whilst on duty.

They're fine..now. During the Soviet times, they had dozens, maybe even hundreds of crashes. They now fly a very modern, western fleet of aircraft that fly for many other airlines including Air Canada, United Airlines, and Lufthansa.

if someone offered the same fares they do id stand on one feet and fly.............go ahead

I don't have experience flying with this company, but i had fl-yd in past many times with Ukrainian Aeroflot. I never had a problems. ( So think positively)

My mate flew with them to Moscow 7 years ago and he said the toilet had a curtain you pulled accross rather than a door!!
They also have quite a poor domestic safety record apparently - will try and dig up some stats.
