Yes, but you need to ask about quarantine laws in the state you'll be visiting. He might have to spend some time in kennels.

Perfectly safe, most airlines have a transport section in the hold of their planes that can be pressurised for animals and kept warm. Thousands of animals pass through the main airports every year.
If in doubt contact the airline and make enquiries.

My dog has done the trip from england to canada and canada to england, he's fine. They act a bit weird at first when they get off but become there old selves again soon.

To bring them back to the uk though you need a pet passport which you probably know but just a heads up. It includes a rabies shot and then a bloood test to make sure that the rabies shot was successful then six months before you return to the UK, which ok as you are planning to be in the US for six month

yes you can put him in cargo, 1000's of dogs and cats and who knows what travel in the cargo department every year.

May I suggest you go to the Dr first and have him detached from you.

Yes, most of the time. Make sure the dog is in good health. They must be OK to set in a cage for many hours. The temperature in most of the cargo bins in the 60's F. So for most dogs that is good. If it is a very small dog, you may be able to carry it on in a small dog carrier in the cabin. Also, check with the airline in advance for all the rules. In addition, you must check for the rules for when you take your dog back home. If you are traveling from different countries then it can get complicated and expensive. I know taking a dog to the UK from the US can get very expensive.

There are companies out there that do this for a fee also. I found several when I did a Google search.

Of course it is. The only way he can go otherwise is if it is a specially trained dog for disabilities.

Yes it will be very safe...just make sure he is put in the right size crate .

My aunt transported her dog from India to Africa. As many of the other responses state, be sure to put him in the right sized crate. Also, I believe she sedated her dog because he was quite excitable.
Apart from the transportation itself, do figure out whether your destination has any quarantine laws.
