Is it true that chewing gum on a plane will keep your ears from popping?

I was wondering...because i have never flown before and i have to tomorrow. Does it work? Also... will your bra be picked up on the metal detector if it has underwire in it?
Additional Details
sorry guys for the bra question! lol.

Why would you want to stop your ears from popping? THat's a necessary process due to the changes in air pressure!

As for the underwire... probably be okay, but HECK aren't those things like real uncomfortable? Dress as comfortably as you can while traveling!

Anita G
Chewing the gum makes your ears pop to relieve the pressure that causes them to hurt.

Your bra should be fine...lol

the gum does work
about the bra ull be ok

The gum trick never really worked for me but I just make myself yawn and that tends to work.
Not to be personal, but it depends on how big your chest is. I am fairly large breasted and my underwire use to go off so I learned to use other bra's on travel days!

Chewing gum works and the underwire might go off, but they will understand.

Yes, the gum works. Anything that makes you moves you're jaw stretches you're ear canal a little bit.

You're ears pop because of air bubbles that get caught in you're head because of presure change. Moving you jaw can get rid of these.

toogerq
The increased pressure of the aircraft causes some people's ears to plug up. Chewing gum can help because of the movement of the jaw. It doesn't always help me, though.

my bra wasnt but yours mite,

gum does sort of help but u have 2 open ur mouth wide enough

emcee
chewing gum does work most of the time but yawning really works a lot better... even if they do pick up the bra on the metal detector, they'll just wand you and figure out it's a bra

Well, your ears will still pop (a good sign), but you won't have the ear pressure pain and feeling you are locked in a drum!

Even sucking a mint will help.
So does yawning.

The act of chewing and swallowing allows the air pressure in your ear nose and throat equalize and hence ears pop.

As far as the bra is concerned... the metal detector is meant to pick up any metal you may have in your possession. All depends upon the threshold they have set it to detect. Lets assume they want to detect anything over an ounce. So if had earrings on, and a bra on, no problem. But if you had dental braces, a bra, a necklace & earrings and jeans with metal buttons, it would set off teh alarm.

So if you had no other metal (or very little metal) on you, the underwire of the bra would not set the alarm off.

Mikey B
Yes, the gum will work.

OhKatie!
It won't stop them from popping, it will actually help them pop to relieve the pressure that will build in your ears. Chew gum as you're taking off and when they announce that they're starting the descent. And don't worry about the metal in your underwire. It's not enough to set it off. Just wear comfortable clothes and you'll be fine.

sarch_uk
Most airports and airlines have banned chewing gum because of the mess it can make,...blame the anti social for that,...you cannot buy it at airports now. Sucking on hard sweets, or chewing sweets or toffees will have the same effect as gum.

Last time I flew to America the detectors picked up my earrings but missed some small ball bearing games that I had with me....
