Is it true that you can get even more drunk on an airplane than on the ground? |

Per Aeromedical.org, alcohol and hypoxia do affect pilot performance but it has not been conclusively shown that one potentiates the other; they just add up. Yes, you will feel lighter headed for the same number of drinks at altitude than you would feel on the ground.
Most commercial airlines maintain their passenger compartments at 6000ft to 8000ft pressure while at cruising altitude so this will affect everyone to varying degrees. The drinks will seem to be more inebriating for some because people react differently to higher cabin altitudes.
For instance, this difference can be seen where traveling to a high mountain doesn't bother most people, but a few will get light headed easily with little exercise. Some even get a terrific altitude induced headache. Of course, some of us can hold our alcohol better than others, too!! |

well i heard it was true
and just like its easier to get drunker in mountains with diff elevation |

Sounds like an urban myth to me. The only difference in a plane is your altitude which affects gravity, air pressure and temperature. But the latter two are controlled in the cabin to match sea level and the first is microscopically different. I've not heard that gravity can affect drunkenness. |

no, it just costs more. |

Nope. |

I think this idea comes from the fact you actually do get drunker at higher elevations. Like if you go to a mountain lodge, a couple glasses of wine and you're as high as a kite. However, the oxygen mix is accounted for when you are on a plane, so you don't get the same effect. I usually have a couple drinks on a plane and it doesn't seem to make any difference. However, on the ground but in the mountains, two glasses of wine or beer and I'm giggling like crazy. |

yes the difference in pressure allows the juice to be absorbed faster. |

Nope. For one, the cabin is pressurized to feel like you're still on the ground. For another, airline berverages tend to be somewhat watered down.

Yup, Your subconcious tells your body that that drink cost 4 times the amount it should have and that you should get drunk faster. And your body happily obliges. Then you just dont give a damn anymore how much it cost :) |
