I was also able to take my laptop on the aircraft as carry-on luggage last month. You must simply declare that you have a laptop and then take it out of the bag for security to examine, unless of course you want to take the chance of checking it in and hoping everything comes out alright. I just have just seen a comment from a porported airline employee and having just come from the TSA official website he is the one who is mistaken, laptops are allowed as carry-on baggage. See for yourself don't take anyone's word for it.

Have lots of cushion for them and mark fragile on the bag (might do some good maybe).

you better phone the airport and ask better be save than sorry.

Sori to offend..but I don't think some people trying to help you here are thinking of recent terrorist events.. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE YOUR LAPTOP AS HANDLUGGAGE AT THE MOMENT, UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!! Personally if you don't have to take it don't.. get an external hardrive or something if you can.. if that helps.. but that must also go in your suitcase. As for insurance.. I would check with insurance company.. because I don't think it would be covered (if you told truth)..if it breaks or goes missing.. sori but you would prob be best to withold the aircraft bit and say it happened somewhere else! I have claimed laptops before on my insurance that were genuinlly damaged at home..so there is no reason they won't cover it.. unless you not properly insured! As for the airline's policy covering it.. i'm not sure! They generally do cover lost baggage (ie if whole case goes missing).. but you'd need to watch fine print..if eg you get to other end and your case is open and your laptop is missing..or you get to other end and your laptop is broken! Let's face it .. lots of travellers could take their old laptops on a flight just now as hold luggage and then claim..so i don't see the airline being held responsible..due current situation as well! Sorry.. i am airline employee but that's not my field..give a call to your insurance company and airline .. and make up false name.. just incase they have to look at your records in future..if god forbid something happens..
Hope that makes sense.. trying to help out here with lots of travel answers and i'm knackered lol!.. good luck x

I was able to bring mine onboard I just had to turn it on in
security to show them it works. if your checking it then pack
it in a suitcase and cushion it with clothes.
bob
Nope, they go in the hold with everything else, and check your insurance as a lot of companies wont cover it in there
Colin B
you can take your laptop as hand luggage but you must not take batteries out as you may be asked by security to see it working
Gordon R
Pack them very carefully OR why bother to take them?
