Is there anything to be gained by actually listening to flight attendants babble about safety before takeoff? |
Additional Details Jessica.. thanks for you honest reply.. and to tell you the truth, I am one of the few that actually makes eye contact and sort of pays attention to your exit row dance that yall do. Prior to my plane ride, I'm usually scoping out were the exit are, and who I may have to eat if we have a high mountain crash, etc..

Jessica,
I'm ashamed that you're a flight attendant and attempting to speak on behalf of all flight attendants worldwide. Put your mp3's back on and ignore us?? WTH?? What kind of advice is THAT??? Do you think that the only person reading this is the person that asked the question??
BABBLE ON?? I'm sorry that we bore you so terribly with such mundane things as how many exits are on board the aircraft you're flying, and where they're located. What are you waiting for?? For the one time that you might actually NEED that information, and you're listening to your MP3 player...ooooooops! Then what?? Do you know how many cabin exits are on board the B777?? The B767-200? B767-400?? 737-300,400,500,700,800,900?? B757-200,300?? Just because all commercial airliners have wings and engines, doesn't mean they are all the same and have the same number of exits, much less operate the same way. We give the passengers the initial basics to help survive a mishap. It's up to us as Flight Attendants to show hopefully that we know more about how to evacuate a full 777 in less than a minute, than we do about how to pour a coke. For those who feel it's just too much to have to suffer through our 4-5 minutes of 'babbling', well...you might as well just wrap that oxygen mask and tubing around your neck when it falls instead.
Oh, and just because YOU've heard it all once or twice and know ALL about every aircraft in service, doesn't mean that there aren't nervous or first, second, third time fliers out there who might actually be interested in hearing what the 'babble' is telling them. |

You never know. They reminder you of where the emergency exits are. That is pretty important if the plane crashes. I always count the number of rows to the nearest exit door just in case. Also when they tell you about these things, as a passenger if you know or have an idea of what to do, then there may be less panic when something happens. Also if there is a sudden loss of cabin pressure, the flight attendants will also need oxygen so they will not be telling you what to do. You are expected to know how to help yourself. |

Of course! Besides for the fact that every instruction you'll ever need to save your life in a plane is included in the safety announcement, other information such as flight time, snack/meal schedules, movies, etc. are also included. You're the ignorant one who doesn't hear any of this, and has to press the call button every 5 seconds to find out something that has already been answered. You're also going to be the guy that freaks out when they don't know what to do in case of an emergency. It's five minutes of good information that everyone should listen to. |

Um...yeah...it's not done just to be annoying...
The ones who never pay attention will be the first ones to die in the event of an emergency because they were too lame to pay attention...
Should we also remove warning labels on stuff just because some people think no one reads it???? |

It is when you are ready to crash. |

The first few times you travel, yes. If you fly even semi-regularly, you can probably ignore most of it after that. The bit where they tell you about a water landing is absurd, since a plane would sink so quickly. But it probably does serve the purpose of helping to calm people a little. It's always a good idea to locate the exit rows, so the presentation does serve as a good reminder to do that. |

Think of how the flight attendant feels about doing the routine.
If that person was your sister, how would you behave differently?
Do/listen unto others as you would like them to do/listen to you. |

Ok here goes. I hate to say me profession is useless. But...
There are some things you should listen too. If you have ever rode on a plane you know that "In the event of sudden change in cabin pressure masks will drop from the ceiling, always put your mask on before assisting someone else, etc"
Those sorts of things you should know and probably don't have to listen too, also listen for if your seats does become a flotation device. Because I believe the B-717 the seats do not become flotation devices where as the B-737 they do. It may be vica versa.
Other then listening for that and the emergency exits. No, most of the information is completely useless.
There is almost no chance to ever use ANY of the "safety" devices. I believe, almost all if not all crashes where people have survived have been in take-off or landing and their "safety" devices aren't what made the difference between live and death. Don't mean to sound grim but ,
you are flying at or above altitude of 10,000 feet going roughly 400-600mph. Add the weight of the plane and fuel.
There is nothing a seat cushion will do to help.
Hope this helps, thankfully you have 9 million to 1 odds of dying in a plane crash. You are more then 9 times more likely to die on your way to the airport. So just put your Mp3 player back on and ignore us completely! :) |

Heya not-omni!
I guess the fact that in the event of a water landing, your seat cushion can be used as a flotation device. |
