Is this really required?

Is it required for a 2 year old to have an FAA approved car seat when flying? I am reading all sorts of responses to this and I would really hate to be turned away from my flight because of this. Thanks :)

No. It's recommended, not required. Children under-2 can fly on a parent's lap. They don't even need their own seat. Once they're over 2 they need to have their own seat, so ticket prices go up.

In any case, call the airline directly to confirm their requirements. Different airlines might have slightly different policies.

Yes and no.

IF you bring a child seat on board, it's required that the seat be FAA-approved. (Required by the rules, but rarely would anyone actually check that.)

But bringing the child seat is required only by common sense and parental responsibility. The rules would allow you to strap a toddler into the adult seatbelt, which does about as much good on an airplane as it does in a car.

Your call.

On the plane a 2 year old does not need to take any car seat on board, unless you want to, since you will be purchasing a full fare ticket (under 2, they are considered infants and seated on the parents lap).
I see many parents taking the car seats for their children but they check them in since they don't want to be carrying so many stuff through the airport.

No. You can lap-sit your child. I point you to:

"During takeoff, landing, and movement on the surface, each person on board shall occupy an approved seat or berth with a separate safety belt properly secured about him/her. However, a person who has not reached his/her second birthday may be held by an adult occupying a seat or berth."

If your child is older than 2, then you need an FAA-approved seat.

Hey I have never heard of this, but it may depend on what company you are flying with.

You could always just purchase one, keep the receipt, leave the tag on, and return it when you're through, providing there is no vomit on it.
