Is this true about airplanes? |
I heard that if something is going to go wrong with a plane, it's most likely to happen when taking off or landing. Is there any truth to this? |

At those times, a lot more variables come into play like weather changes, changes in air pressure, changes in structural stresses, stress on the engines, the increased presence of other aircraft around the airport, more physical obstacles on the ground, etc. Both the pilots and the flight systems are constantly adjusting for these changes, increasing the odds of an error or failure.

Yes, this is true. That is one of the reasons that portable electronic devices are requested to be turned off below 10,000 feet. The flight crew recommends your full attention in case anything were to go wrong. Although aviation accidents and incidents are rare, most have been shown to occur on or near the runway. It's just statistical, and no accidents happens on a normal day. |

yes, that is true.
over half of air crash deths occur on landing/final approach with things like crash landings, overruns, falling short ect.....
if it happens during take off, it happens within a few minutes. |

Yup, and I was told usually within the first 30 seconds after take off, and 30 seconds prior to landing. It's rare that it happens, I wouldn't worry about it nor check your watch until that period is over, just enjoy your flight if your flying soon. |

Sorry the reason electronic equipment is required to be turned off is because it COULD interfere with navigational systems. Not very likely but those are the rules.
It is true that statistically most accidents happen during take-off (actually climb phase) and Landing (descend phase). Main reasoning is because you are at max weight, max power in a lot of traffic. Also weather mostly affects airplanes below 10,000 feet or so. If you have wind sheer at 30,000 feet you might get bumped around or loose a few hundred feet. If the same happens close to the ground its much more dangerous.
Look flying is still the safest mode of transportation. You would have to every day for over 100 years before you would have an "incident" and that is not even defined as a crash.

In terms of an accident, this is true. While there are mechanical issues that occur enroute most do not cause a crash. |

Yes. This is true. But if they noticed it while taking off; they would probabaly do a U-turn and land back down. On the other hand landing is the tricky part |

yes... thats true... that is because that is the most critical phase of the flight. most accidents/incidents happen during this phase. when the plane is up there they are very far apart from each other. but when they are going to land or already at land they are very close to each other. when a plane lands after the plane is entering the taxi way another plane is already at final approach. remember planes fly very fast.
but remember airplane accidents/incidents don't happen all the time. there are more car accidents than plane accidents. people are more likely to die on car accidents than plane crashes. |

If you mean an accident, then yes, it is true.
Statistically, the chances of you ever being in a plane accident are very, very, very slim, but if one ever were to happen, it's most likely to occur at takeoff/landing, as those are the two most dangerous times of the flight. This, of course, is provided that it's the plane's/pilot's fault- a terrorist bombing/incident could happen at any time, but with security measures in place today, it's unlikely. |
