It was Thursday, Feb. 12 around 10:20 PM when the plane crashed in Buffalo, not Friday the 13th. |

The plane crashed the night of Thursday, the 12th. Not Friday the 13th. Just thought I'd point that out.
As for the mayday, witnesses said the plane was almost vertical, as in a nose-dive. If that was the case, and I'm inclined to believe the witnesses, the pilot wouldn't have much time before 2000-2500 feet became 0. (News stations have varied at what height the plane was flying at) |

Sorry, but I don't get it. There has been no fatal aircraft accidents today. There was yesterday, though.
And that pilot didn't radio a MAYDAY because he was a little busy at the time trying to save those 50 people. |

It crashed yesterday. The pilot didn't actually lose control until he was on final and put the landing gear down. The added drag in combination with the ice on the wings doomed the flight. |

No, it's not any scarier than an accident on any other day.
There are at least two Friday the 13ths every year, but statistically bad things don't happen any more often on these days than on any other days. Indeed, many cultures have no taboos about the number 13, and they don't notice any mysterious bad happenings, either (perhaps because they aren't looking for them every time they see the number 13).
Whatever happened to this flight probably happened quickly, and so the pilots were occupied with flying the plane. They would not declare an emergency unless they needed the cooperation of ATC and had time to do so, which apparently was not the case here. |

Any which way 50 people died and it's shocking even if it was the 12th those people on the plane had a unlucky thursday the 12th. |

From experience as an airline pilot, calling a mayday is one of the hardest things to do. For one, you have to account that the pilot was trying to regain the control of the aircraft that was in distress, and it is very complicated to do that while handling radio transmissions. Often, the pilots that fly express turbo props are newbies, and usually have little to no aircraft distress experience. |

Wow, never thought of that, and it happened just several minutes into it, wow, first fatal crash in 2.5 years. Good point, I can't believe that never crossed my mind. |
