When you are on the airplane, they don't ask for your ID when purchasing alcoholic beverages! Like on my flight from London back to USA, I bought 2 bottles of red wine! And guess what? I'm 16! lol.
It was an American airline too.
I think it was awesome!!!

The drinking age is the same as whatever country the aircraft departs from, so in your case on the aircraft the drinking age was 18. But maybe you look a bit older than 16 and the fact that you were traveling alone reinforced this impression. The crew member probably made a quick decision and assumed you were 2 years older. |

Keep in mind that when you return to US soil you are subject to US drinking age laws and if you were inspected by customs officers, most likely you would have had the wine confiscated and possibly be arrested for being a minor in posession of alcohol, a criminal offense. lol. |

It depends on the airline and the crew member...my husband got carded when asking for an alcoholic drink on Air Canada. He was 29 at the time....the work collegaues travelling with him found it very funny :-) |

The flight attendants must figure that no one under the age of the legal drinking age will have the guts to order alchohol. Where WERE your parents?
Also I think that because you were flying over the ocean, you go out of country which means that you go out of the country limits for its laws, meaning that the drinking age is different. |
