It depends on where you are going. The entire month of August, Europe is on vacation, so rates go up. There have been REALLY good fare sales to Europe lately. International of course will always be expensive, $400-$500 or more are just the International fee's that are not included in the base fare or published fare that you see when you are price comparing. The trick is to book as far out as possible. 30 days or more in advanced is when you get the best prices. Airlines work in a tier system, as each of the lower fares sells out it goes to the next tier. The bulk consolidator websites like Priceline, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire, Lowestfare....etc (any website that shows you price before schedules or airlines) are NOT recommended especially for International Travel. Always try to book directly with the airline. The reason I suggest this is because these websites have strict fare rules and restrictions on these tickets. You can not for any reason change them and should you have a problem the airlines will not touch these tickets. I worked for an airline and I have seen more people get burned with these websites than anything. On top of the rules, they add booking fee's.

Plan your trip well in advanced. Sign up for Travel Zoo, its a weekly e-mailer that keeps abreast to the fare sales. Also, keep an eye out in the Travel section of your largest local news paper. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution has a great travel section. The airlines websites have Vacation Packages as well, and most have a low price guarentee with a 24 hr cancellation policy now.

You can use an aggrigate website like Kayak.com or Booking Buddy, but I still find cheaper fares with the airlines themselves. But, International you can expect to pay a fairly good amount. Look at travel insurance as well since you will be forking over quite a bit of money. I'll include a link below from the Consumer Advisor, Clark Howard, from here in Atlanta and what he suggest about it.

Like I said, I worked for an airline and if you need help, shoot me an e-mail and I'll see what I can find. Just tell me your departure city and where you are wanting to fly to and the dates and I can tell you what to expect as far as fares go.

No matter what website you use, ALWAYS READ ALL OF THE FARE RULES so that you know what you are agreeing to.

Buy early! Also, use a travel agent. they get you the best prices.
