Luggage Question?

I'm going on my first long distance flight and this involves a change of airline half-way through, what I need to know is do I have to collect my luggage and check it in with the second airline when I get to connecting airport?

It all depends on if you booked the itinerary together or not and if the coonecting airline has a baggage agreement with the first. If you have two seperate itineraries, then and the airlines have a baggage agreement you just have to show the itinerary or ticket of the 2nd airline. If not, you will be repsonsible for collecting your luggage and re-checking it. And from experience, Ive worked baggage claim for years and that is where more bags get lost or delayed. The airline to airline transfers are not priority and have a higher rate of not arriving with you. If you have time between flights, I suggest just checking your bags to your transfer point and then re-checking them with the second airline.

IF your connection is more than 6 hrs from arrival, you will have to claim and recheck your bags anyway.

Should you choose to check them through, make sure you have a change of clothes and toiletries for a few nights just in case in your carry on. Dont pack medication in your checked luggage either. Also make sure when they tag your bag that is has the correct destination code on the tag. Have the agent verify the final destination that is tagged on the bag.

Put a copy of your itinerary as well as any and all contact information for your home and where you will be traveling including hotel information, home address and phone numbers as well as cell phone number. This way if the bag tag is seperated, they will have a way of getting a hold of you should your bag get lost. Also make sure your outer tags have your current name and address as well as phone number attached as well.

No, the airlines will transfer it for you... They will do this even if you use different carriers (airlines). The one exception is when coming to the US from overseas and are changing flights. Then you have to collect your luggage to go through customs and then they will collect it and put the luggage on the proper flight.

Yes you do........... sometimes even if its the same airline you have to...!

You'll have to ask the check in agent at the time of check in, whether she is labelling the luggage with the destination being the 'stopover' or the final destination. In this way, you'll find out whether you'll need to pick up, or at least identify your bag before it is put onto the next flight.

all of those guys are wrong. My dad went to Stockholm from OZ with 2 tickets and his bags were checked right through. He did 12 000 miles of travel on planes and he only saw it the 1st time in Stockholm.

It does not matter how many tickets you have, if you are flying 2 or 3 seperate INTERNATIONAL flights, you wont see your bag untill your final destination as to collect your bag at an international airport, you must go through passport control. You dont have to go through passport if you are transiting.

For domestic travel, you will have to collect your bags unless it is 1 ticket the 2 ticket thing does not work domesticly.

Ask the Check In guy and he will tell you/

Enjoy!

Probably not, most connections will transfer your baggage to your next flight.

The only exceptions I've seen is in some countries where I land off an international flight and transfer to a domestice flight. This applies in the USA, you have to clear your bags through customs at the point you enter the country and not where you end your journey.

The best person to ask if the person who checks you in at the point of departure, they will know for sure.

It depends on how your flight was booked. If you booked it as one trip with connections, then the airline will do it for you. If you booked it as two sepatate itineraries, you will have to collect your luggage.

The easiest thing to do is to ask when and where are you supposed collect yoru luggage when you are checking in.

trymeimbritish
Take the first one that comes out...bung it onto your flight..then when u arrive..claim yours aint there...and watch luggage delivered to your door...

If you are travelling on a thru ticket which means your entire itinerary is booked as a whole booking and the country permits either domestic or international interlining then the airline will send the bags to your final destination. However if you have seperate tickets depending on the airline they will not thru check your bags it will only be sent to your first point. The exceptions where you can not get your bags checked thru are if you are going to the USA, and connecting to another US city, if you are connecting to canada your fine, also if you are going to India or china or even australia connecting to another city in OZ you will have to collect your bags. Another place is paris if you are going to charles de gaulle and connecting to orly then you will have to collect your bags. If your connecting flight is with a no frills airline or starts with one then bags can not be thru checked they must be collected. If in doubt ask the airline when you check in and make sure if you have to collect your bags your connecting flight gives you plenty of time to collect and re check in
hope this helps

I THINK I KNOW WHAT I AM TAKING ABOUT I WORK FOR AN AIRLINE AS FOR AFLUMPIRE YOU NEED TO GET SOME FACTS RIGHT BEFORE U JUDGE PEOPLES ANSWERS

Oh no!
No, give all your tickets to the person who checks you in to the first flight and your baggage will be marked for transfer to your second flight. Whether or not it gets there depends on the baggage handlers and whether they can be arsed, there is something on the telly, they are on strike e.t.c
But you do nothing other than check the bag in at your first airport and hopefully collect it at your last.
