Stansted is significantly larger in terms of the number of passengers who pass through per day but Luton is able to accommodate planes of all sizes just as Stansted.
Geographically it is as others say about 30 miles north of London so a little closer than Stansted. You can get there by train (Luton Parkway) out of Kings Cross Thameslink but there is the need to make a short bus transfer at Parkway to get to the terminal. They are however building an access road to the M1 so access will improve by road and I am sure the current limited coach options from London will then be on a par with those available to Stansted from Victoria and Stratford (as well as the current direct train service available out of Liverpool Street).
As Luton is currently quieter it will probably grow quicker than Stansted in coming years.
Both airports are fine to use in my experience.

Luton airport is about the same size as Stanstead (maybe a little smaller from a passengers point of view) which is about 1/3 size of Heathrow. It is about 40-60 min from Kings Cross to Luton by train depending on stops. The best source of info for all aiports owned and run by BAA is www.baa.co.uk and they actually have mini airport guides including all transport links as well as parking and terminal guides. Enjoy

Stansted is much bigger than Luton airport. I think Luton might be closer to London, but not as accessible by public transport. Stansted has a direct train link. It takes 45 minutes from central London.

They are both quite similar in size although Luton is closer to London, they offer the traveller the choice of different destinations where Airports like Heathrow go to the most direct and popular destinations and they are more accessible to us the traveller.

Luton smaller than Stansted and about 34 road miles from Nelson's column.
