MP3 Player during takeoff...?

For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to listen to Pink Floyd's song "Learning to fly" during the takeoff of a plane.

I know that cell phones, pdas and laptops have to be off because they emit but I have trouble believing that my tiny 500mb cheap Sansa mp3 player could cause any trouble as it doesn't emit anything (not that I know of anyway).

Could you tell me if you've ever listened to your Ipod/Mp3 player during takeoff and if so, did anyone notice or care?

Thanks in advance : )

No, you cant listen to your mp3 player when the plane is taking off. You have to turn it off. Thats the rule. I saw the flight attendants enforcing this rule while i was on the plane this one time. They were going up and down the aisle checking to see if people had all their electronics off.

dont be a jerk and just do what the flight attendants say...

Hello,

The reason they have you turn off your MP3 player is so that you pay attention to the take-off and landing. These are the two most dangerous times during the flight and if anything were to happen they need to make sure everyone can hear the announcements. You can usually turn it back on within 10 minutes of take-off.

If you are caught with it on they can fine you heavily or put you in jail. It is an FAA rule and not something to be fooled around with.

I've done it along time ago pre 9/11 heck it was pre 1990 I had my walkman clone with me and listened to music on arrival. I'm still here to tell the tale, however that was a long time ago and they have tightened up the rules regarding these things. Its done for your safety and other pax but it is also done to get those yahoos like me turn off our laptops or PSPs and put that stuff away for landing.

What you can do is get bone conduction speakers I remember seeing them in a catalogue I think it was in the Sharper Image but it was way too expensive for a lets try it out purchase.

You know the only thing stopping you from humming the tune is the passanger next to you may throttle you for being annoying but heck go for it.

I had quite a long wait before the plane took off, so I was listening to my mp3-player before take-off, & the air-hostess told me to switch it off, & that I could switch it on again when the plane is in the air. As far as I know, they are pretty strict about these things (even though I don't think an mp3 player could be disruptive to the flight)

If I recall I saw something on mythbusters a ways back that showed that things like cell phones and other electronic devices have no measurable affect on a plane's electronics.

However, that doesn't stop them from saying that you need to turn off all things electronic when you fly.

No, I have not. I have seen them ask people who have earbuds in, if they have turned off their device. I really think a low powered mp3 player would not affect the radios.

you can't listen to an mp3 while takeoff they won't let you

I don't believe you can do so. It doesn't really affect the aircraft but it is a FAA rule that you have to follow everything, absolutely everything that the flight crew tells you to do.
