Mom and toddler kicked off airplane - ?

What do you guys think of this news story?

As far as I'm concerned, I support the airline. I've been on too many planes, buses, and trains with noisy children. Why inconvenience a hundred adults for the benefit of one toddler? Some travelers need to work, some need sleep, others just want to relax. Quietly.

Opinions?

Personally my feelings are, you are to expect some noise on the plane...kids will be kids..if you don't want to deal w/ them, fly first class or not at all...if the kid was screaming uncontrollably, then yes, that is a nuisance...but he wasn't. They should have offered to get him some juice or cookies or something, or maybe move their seats w/ another guest at the back or front of the plane...

?
As an air traveler and a mother I would have to say that it is hard to keep a toddler very occupied when traveling in a cramped space. I have never given my kids any more than Tylenol (for ear pain) and I don't agree with drugging a child just to keep others happy. Maybe the airlines should consider seating people with small children towards the front of the plane and try to keep all passengers that are traveling with small children in a group. At least that way the kids and parents have something in common and can help each other out if need be. I don't travel by air very much anymore because of the hassle, expense, and lack of customer service. Noisy children are a nuisance, but can you blame the child for being a child or the parent for trying to keep the child somewhat amused?

Scooter Girl
If this were going to be a long cross country or continental flight then I can understand the need for the child to be quiet, but this was a ONE HOUR flight. If it were someones sick little puppy that was whining would you be more tolerant?? And the idea of a flight attendant suggesting to the mother of this child to give him some kind of drug to make her job easier is just ludicrous. I hope she sues the airline and the flight attendant.

Being a Flight Attendant myself, I know that we just don't remove anyone from an airplane, unless it is a threat to the safety of the flight or the person doesn't want to follow the rules, after giving them chances to adhere to them. The media never took the Flight Attendant's side of the story. To remove a woman because her kid was talking doesn't make sense at all... I am sure something else was going on.
But I agree that nowadays parents give no boundaries to children, they can get away with anything... They have little control over their kids and sometimes that is irritating to other passengers.

I didn't see the story...no link? But I have to say that the toddler is a person just like any one of us, only smaller. If the mom bought the tickets and paid for them just like everyone else, they should be able to stay.

What's next kicking off a mentally retarded person because they can't keep it down? Or a fat person because it makes everyone uncomfortable around them?

This world is full of children and that's just how it is. Our society is too "PC" today, we should just learn to deal with things that don't go our way and that we can't control.

Turn on your Ipod or CD player if you don't want to hear it. Don't have one? Go get one. They also make these nifty things called ear plugs. Try them.

OK I just read someones answer saying she wouldn't drug her child for the comfort of other passengers?!?!? If that were acceptable then I could tape shut the persons mouth who won't stop talking on their cell phone when it disturbs me. Or maybe I should make over that ugly girl I see all the time because she just gives everyone the chills.

This is whats wrong with our country today...we aren't individuals...we're all part of the herd...and God forbid anyone disturb the herd!
Yes, I said GOD!! AMEN!!!!!
Hope that bothers some of ya'll ;)

I totally agree. I have been on long flights with annoying kids. I flew for two hours last year and the kid beside me wanted to go to the restroom 7 times. I offered to change my aisle seat with the window seat, but the mom said the kid wanted to sit by the window. The flight attendant was no help since there were no open seats and no one to switch with me.

I am absolutely appalled at the behavior the Flight Attendant handling the 19 month old baby and his Mother. The attendant told the mother ro give the baby benadryl to shut him up or get off of the plane, The mom refused so the FA stated later that the mom threatened her, when many witnesses say that was not the case at all. The thought of her suggesting to drug a child to keep him quiet is absolutely disgusting to me. Benadryl is not safe for children under the age of six with out a Dr's suggestion, you can go right on the web site and read it for yourself and see. Was the Flight Attendant also a Physician able to prescribe such medications? In this anti drug culture I cannot believe that the Airline would condone such actions. If we teach a child today to take something to quiet him down what are we teaching him for tomorrow? I hope serious action is taken to prevent something like this from happening in the future, I would not want my children to have to be drugged to fly the so called "friendly skies."

Additional Details

There were many other passengers who witnessed this event and said that this baby was not being loud or out of control or bothersome to any one. He was talking in a normal voice and the FA did not like it. She was clearly the only one who was bothered by this according to all of the reports. I understand that if a child is being unruly that they need to take action but if a child is talking come on. What would you do? I certainly dont think that a baby talking would have cause a crash.

Here is the report grom ABC news http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3371901

yeah i agree with the airline. a little noise is bearable, but when your kid isnt disciplined enough to stop talking then you have a problem and you shouldn't be flying with the kid. the mom is stupid for saying that she wouldnt "drug her child to make it more convenient for the other passengers." when you have a kid you have to realize that not everyone thinks it cute when they say "bye bye plane" 50 times.

Andrew
The child was saying something threatning, no wonder they were taken off the plane.

dave o
don't know about this story but some filthy raghead kept a cacky nappy by his seat the whole time from london to dubai and refused to move it when asked by the attendant
If they'd asked for volunteers i'd have thrown him out

i agree

We're living in an age with less personal responsibility -- and a self-check on junior, here would have gone a long way (instead of being defiant, or just saying 'that's my boy').

Yes, the airline was correct -- but stopping or turning back an airplane is drastic. I know you just can't drop mom & the brat out by parachute... but, a $5,000 fine and some law should be enacted, as a punishment for these mom-types that can't understand what flying means, especially today. (remember, the TOPIC here wasn't that the kid was loud or annoying simply -- but what he was shouting over & over & over & over that the plane was going down, or something to that extent...) The mom would have been better served to pinch the kid and make him cry vs. that, if that was the issue!

But, as an adult she made a choice NOT to act - but to defy the flight attendents, etc. to believe her child was infallable here, which is typical... of a certain sort of detached young-mom nowadays. ...Think about it, in this CASE the mother not only HAPPILY has her son on TV for national news -- but is giddy over making some $$$ on this, as a result of her son and in any moment hasn't taken any blame for him/her, right?
