My dad won't let me go on plane to visit my relatives because he think's i'm going to get lost.. HELP?!

i'm planning to go visit my relatives in san francisco, CA from Detroit, MI (metro airport). My dad isn't too comfortable of letting me go by myself and manage myself in the airport 9that's the main thing.) how can i get my dad to believe or do something for him to be more comfortable of letting me go in the airport to find mi gate. I am 15 years old by the way, right on the "unaccompanied young adults" section!

Tell your dad that the UM (unaccompaninied minor) procedures are very strict. This is pretty much how your experience will go...
- Your dad will take you to the airport and check you in as a UM

- He will then take you to your gate and wait until your plane arrives

-The gate agent will identify you as a UM to the flight crew and you will take your seat

-Once you arrive at your destination you wait until the flight attendant escorts you off the plane and takes you to the gate agent who will in turn take you to whomever your dad designates to pick you up.

See...you're never left alone, so there is no way to really get lost.

Also, be sure to tell your dad that children as young as seven or eight travel as UM's all the time...at fifteen i'm sure you can handle it.

Good Luck!!

We know you'll be fine. We just need to find a way to reassure your dad.
Tell him that if you get to the airport one hour before other adults, then you will have one extra hour for "getting lost". It's ok to get lost a bit, find your mistake and then still arrive at the gate. What could possibly happen except for walking a bit extra? Also tell him to let you have a cell phone with you so he can call you anytime while you're in the terminal. Tell him you will call him when you're on the plane just before powering off your phone for take-off. Then you will call him again when the plane lands. You will also call him if you ever need help or instructions.

because of your age your father will be able to escort you to the gate, and wait with you until your plane takes off. Your relatives then will be able to receive passes to be right at your gate when you get off the plane. Flying Northwest gives you a direct flight, so there will be no going around the airport by yourself, and the return will be the exact same thing.

Make sure he understands that since you are an unaccompanied minor, airlines take very good care of you. He just needs to make sure they know you are by yourself before you go and when you check in.

They will make sure you are met at the gate if you have to transfer planes.

Have fun...hope this helps

If you are responsible he might let you go and try and tell him that you will not get lost

parents just care that's all

Get him to talk to the airline about their unaccompanied service. They can explain the safe-guards they build in.
You can also promise to make safe arrival calls to him.
It's not you, that's the problem, there's lots of weirdos out there.

Wow thats really too bad.
Just tell him to put a stuertis with you on your flight so you wont get lost. and tell him that flights from detroit to san fransisco is non stop so you wont get lost.
try telling your mother to convince him (that allways works for me). I flew from Israel to raleigh NC last summer by myself and there were 3 stops (zuric, london,NYC) and I didnt get lost, and I also am 15.
hope you convince him to go.

DTW (Detroit Airport) is very "user" friendly. Its very easy to get from one end of the airport to the other. If you take Northwest Airlines, you'll end up in the main terminal. There are workers and cops all around with 2 skytrans. DTW is not bad at all. ive flown out of there many times and never once got lost on my own (im 17) Hope this helps.

I've gone on an airplane by myself 2 times!!! and I'm a couple of years younger then you. Your relatives HAVE to be at the gate where you come out to pick you up so the flight attendent can see your relatives pick you up. Well hope this helps!! Good luck!!

The SF airport is humongous, I try to avoid it like the plague. I prefer smaller airports such as San Jose, Oakland or Sacramento. You should look into those airports if your trying to minimize getting lost.
